Well, that may be jumping to conclusions-but the statistical fact is that the volunteer rate barely budged in 2009 despite numerous among us being unemployed.

In fact, the report states that "during the year ending in September 2009, 29.7 percent of all employed persons volunteered. There is no such thing as a typical day. When we wake up in the morning, we do have our scheduled wildlife control missions-but Mother Nature frequently has plans for us, too. Squirrels under baby cribs, raccoons under couches, bats in the draperies... our career never allows for the same ol' thing day after day. He was laid off not once but twice from his job as a celebrity magazine editor. While he was reinstated two weeks after the first blow in January 2009, he was let go again in April. "It was an emotional rollercoaster to say the least," he says.

Not only did the double-layoff mean he had to deal with all of those emotions twice, but since he's British, he had to move from New York City, where he'd been for four years, to his native England. "My visa was attached to my job, so no job meant no visa," he says. "Moving back to England was tough; it felt like I was leaving a really great party way too early." While he worked briefly at a magazine in London, his heart wasn't in it, and he felt lost.

You probably smell.

The Best Day to Get a Job...

Last week (last Tuesday to be precise) marked "the busiest day of the year for job seekers" in the U.K.

Which made me wonder, what's the busiest job-searching day in the U.S.? Do we even have one?

Extensive research has proven inconclusive, although some claim that January 7th is "the busiest day for job hunters." (Cocktail party factoid: The busiest day for plumbers? (Trivia: This company was the very first hotel "chain." Take a guess!)

On the day I was laid off, I was brought into the restaurant section of the hotel.
Often, those are the last words you ever want to say when you get laid off. Why should you apologize? It's your boss who owes you one, right?

But as a recent article in the Wall Street Journal points out, these days people are more anxious than ever to get past misdeeds off their chests, whether that means admitting to stealing a box of crayons from a neighbor kid when you were 10 or apologizing to your former employer for writing a tell-all about the company.

Even famous folks are 'fessing up to their faults. Serena Williams apologized twice for her controversial U.S. Open outburst. Posh and Becks' former nanny apologized for revealing confidential information about the family to the press. And Congressman Joe Wilson apologized to President Obama after shouting "You Lie!" during an address to a joint session of Congress. (See more famous apologies here.)

Who Said We Were Giving Up?

I recently read an article that claimed the unemployment rate is staying below 10 percent because we unemployed people have just packed it up and called it quits.

And according to the statistics, maybe this is a little bit true.
