KOLKATA, India (AP) - Police say a mob beat to death the CEO of an Indian jute factory in a dispute over increasing their working hours.

Police Superintendent Sunil Chowdhury said four people were arrested Sunday and two more on Monday after the attack at the North Brook Jute Mill in the eastern Indian state of West Bengal.

The mob had stormed the office of 60-year-old CEO H.K. Maheswari after he denied their request to work and be paid for 40 hours instead of 25.

Maheswari died on the way to a hospital. A manager and a security guard were also hospitalized with injuries.

West Bengal is known for its combative labor unions backed by political parties. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee blamed the violence on unions run by opposition parties, which denied any role.

It's a shame they couldn't negotiate and felt like that's what they had to do...

It's difficult to negotiate with a dead CEO. The unions here in America tried to warn us that.CAFE,NAFTA,the CHINESE EXPORT BILL,etc would lead to the decimation of the American middle class. Looks like they were right.

It seems unlikely that killing the CEO will increase their working hours.

The uS has the worst wage disparity on the planet. You can thank the republicans and their 1% corporate masters for the decline in our middle class

Wow... That would explain the homes, cars, food, standard of living. I finally get why all the rest of the world wants to come here. They need more wage disparity.
Evidently you have never been out of Grandma's basement. Try going to 3/4 of the rest of the world and talk like that... bless your heart.

I think your the one that should try leaving mom's basement. Have you checked the number of people jobless? homeless? The number of children that go to bed hungry every night in this country?

Yes, that standard of living may be headed for the toilet but we still have it - and the toilet.
