Professor Gets Canned For Appearing on Beer Label

Christian university found charity appearance inappropriate

Whoever said that all publicity is good publicity haven't spoken to Dr. Paul Roof. He became a former associate professor of sociology when Charleston Southern University, a Christian-affiliated school in South Carolina, fired him because his face, with an elaborate beard, appeared on a can of beer, according to WCBD-TV.

Roof has a long beard that he normally wears straight down. But when he competes, he waxes and configures it into what you might describe as facial sculptures.

That second picture came from when he won second place in the Full Beard Freestyle Mid-Atlantic Championships in Richmond, Va. about a year ago. Roof also founded the Holy City Beard & Moustache Society, a beard and mustache club founded in May 2007 and affiliated with the World Beard & Moustache Association, according to the group's Facebook page.

The group annually raises money for ovarian cancer research and support. As part of the event, Holy City Brewing created a beer it called Chucktown Follicle Brown to help the group raise additional funds, as the company's Facebook page explained. Roof's image, sporting an elaborately coiffed beard and cowboy hat, was on the can.

On Friday, Roof posted the following on Facebook:

To all my FB friends & especially my CSU students (who it has been an honor & privilege mentoring & teaching these past 6 years) ..... today I was fired from my position as Associate Professor of Sociology because my image (which I do not own & received no compensation) based on a photograph by Greg Anderson Photography appears on a beer can. The image has been used for many things including DIG SOUTH & for Lubbock Young Life worship services in Texas.......as a sociologist who studies popular culture & symbolic interaction the diverse areas where the image appears makes it a great educational tool.

Roof told WBCD that he received an email message early last week, met with his dean on Wednesday, and thought that all was well. On Friday he was called into a vice-president's office and fired. His faculty page has already been removed from the school's website. According to the site RateMyProfessors.com, Roof was popular with students.

"I was told that it was not representative of a Christian environment," he told WBCD. "And for me a Christian environment entails two things: looking out for other people and forgiveness of others who've transgressed you."

Holy City Brewing issued a statement on Facebook that it was "shocked and disappointed" to hear of the dismissal: Paul is a good man and is a huge part of the Charleston community that has helped raise tons of money for Charleston charities. We are honored that he let us put his image on our can!"

Roof told WBCD that he is consulting an attorney to consider his next steps. Presumably visiting a barber is not one of them.

I have no gripes with this well groomed beard , but it might insult some Islamic groups, so if they don#t like it they should shave their evil looking hairdoos & wear some decent clothes for a change:

A great example of what happens when teachers are stripped of their due process/bargaining rights etc. via weak unions or an absence of unions.

Hmmm. The Jesus I know had a beard and didn't mind hangin' out and having a glass, or two, of wine. They must worship that other mean Jesus, who does a lot of hating.

This is more like some knee-jerk fatwa issued by some cleric still living in the 9th century...than a decision by some presumably enlightened US college board. Pathetic display of typically non-christian values on behalf of the school............

"because my image (which I do not own)".....

Did he sell his image to the Devil?

considering the man has no legal control over the use of that image, this is just plain wrong.... but maybe it'll help put an end to the full-beard trend.... yuck!

Now we all know Jesus did not drink no beer. Thats EVIL! He just turned water in to wine for drunken party guests.
