Air Force Vet's Wife Pays Firefighters' $123 Grocery Bill

Leaving groceries to answer an emergency call, they came back to find them paid for.

Firefighters in the city of Vacaville, Calif. found that someone remembered them on Memorial Day weekend. An anonymous woman, who described herself as the wife of an Air Force veteran, paid their grocery tab when they were called away for an emergency and had to leave the local Costco, according to KOVR-TV. In thanks, the firefighters have already been paying the generosity forward.

On a holiday dedicated to remembering veterans, the firefighters were buying groceries for the station, as they literally live there during a typical 24-hour shift. The list included tri-tip steak, corn, and watermelon, perfect for a holiday barbecue, as KTVU-TV reported. The designated shoppers, dressed in camouflage T-shirts in honor of veterans, had brought the cart to the front of the store to pay when they got a 911 call from station 71, according to the Vacaville Firefighters Association Local 3501 Facebook page.

The crew left the cart at the store and immediately responded. When they returned, the firefighters found that someone had already paid for the groceries. An anonymous note read, "Firefighters: Thanks for being there for us! Have a good weekend," followed by a smiley face and signed an "Air Force wife," according to the image on the Vacaville Firefighters Association Facebook page.

Because the woman paid for the food anonymously, the firefighters don't know who to thank. So they've been paying the generosity forward.

"Later that day ... the crew was at [Lucky Supermarket]," Battalion Chief Jeff Ryder told KOVR-TV. "There was an older couple behind them buying flowers. It appeared to be for Memorial Day. They were red, white, and blue flowers. And the crew took some of that money and paid for the flowers." They also hosted a 91-year-old veteran for dinner at the station on Tuesday.

Before this happened, the department had planned an event for tonight called "Honoring Our Heroes," with half of the restaurant's proceeds going to the Travis Air Force Base's Fisher House, which houses military families for free to be near a hospitalized loved one. The facility operates at an average 100 percent capacity and has hosted more than 3,200 people since it opened in 1994.

"This was special just because it was Memorial Day weekend and it happened to be an Air Force Wife that did this for us," Ryder told KOVR-TV.

So one person getting a government check pays for the groceries of another person getting a government check.

You idiot. The fact she was an Air Force wife is not the point. She took some of the family money, regardless of what company it came from, and used it to say thank you to people who put thier life at risk to save others. Get over it!!!

I ask all the complainers out here, how can this be "a waste of taxpayer money"?

As long as they, the FD are in their first due district/response area, what difference does it make? They are considered 'on radio' or 'in service on radio' meaning their response is a simple radio message away. Usually the driver/pump operator is waiting in the truck for the crew while the crew shops. The only faster response is if the entire crew was in the truck and on the road.

As for being "over paid"? Unless you have 'been there' with fire rolling over your head while you are crawling on a floor in a heat and smoke filled apartment, can't see an inch in front of your face mask, searching for kids or trying to cut a hole in the roof to let the heat and smoke out while fire is roaring an inch under your boots on the underside of the roof knowing the roof could collapse anytime, or you carry out a dead child in your arms from a stupid parent that "just went for cigarettes", don't tell me that I'm 'over paid'.

That comment is usually from someone that has never needed emergency help or is working a dead end job or just plain jealous. There is nothing stopping you complainers from getting an application, filling it out, handing it in, taking the test and being appointed to the job except YOU and your attitude. You could be 'over paid' then too but you would rather complain.

I was a Firefighter for 43 years with 35 yrs as a career Firefighter and also a past Vol. Fire Chief of my home town FD for 13 years.
I encouraged my crews to get out of the station and ride the district to get familiar with it and be readily available.
The food markets, deli's and convenient stores loved it when the FD guys would stop in. We never expected anything for free, we always paid or offered to. Yes, some places gave us free veggies, maybe some pasta and so on. But we ALWAYS offered to pay and we ALWAYS thanked them for it.

So I'm thanking 'Air Force Wife' and all the other kind people that understands the true meaning of what 'Air Force Wife' did. Air Force Wife and all the other kind people out here, Thank You!

I'm sure that firefighters are underpaid for the job they do; how can any amount of money be enough when you're surrounded by smoke and flames, wondering if this is the one you won't come out of. I know I couldn't do your job. Firefighters are heroes. From a 25-year desk jockey, thank you for 43 years of bravery and dedication.

TY Michelle for your positive comments!!! i think alot of people posts comments just to see thier words in print. How can a gesture of kindness be turned into a conspiricy, why is there so much hate for anything good?yes these are questions people should be asking .I just had a refresher in the history lessons when I watched "the world wars "on the history channel do we really want to return to an era where there was so much hatred for a fellow men/women that the entire world was at war!!!

yet the libs hate the Military Go Figure. Obama did his Photo Op and is trying desparately to minimuize the impact of his ABJECT failure to lead after 6 years of knowing their was a huge corrupt VA. We the taxpayer foot the bill from criminals bonus and dying Veteran's BUT There's Mr Gladfly Obama making it so sincere HOW much he LOVES the Military. If this guy got any more fake he'd be a counterfeit three dollar bill

Deborah, you have a few things wrong. Libs don't hate the military. What does a courageous fire department have to do with a huge corrupt VA, and did you think that running the VA was the primary job of a President? What you mean by "We the taxpayer foot the bill from criminals bonus and dying Veteran's" I have no idea. Lastly, a three dollar bill, by definition, would be fake -- you can't have a counterfeit of something that doesn't exist. Why don't you go to a posting that wants to discuss the failures of President Obama, and leave this one for people who want to celebrate a giving, grateful air force wife and a heroic hard working fire department.

I noticed the comment from GFH about memorial day being for the vets. Yes, or lost vets should be remembered and it was originally made for them, however, this retired Air Force veterans wife felt the need to forward her thanks to those that are first responders in her community. It could also be that some of those first responders, {fire fighters}, are also vets. It could also be that she and her retired air force husband at one time or another have had need for them in the past, and she suddenly had a way of saying thanks to them in a more personal manner. Yes, Memorial day was originaly designed for our lost comrads in arms. However, although perhaps they haven't lost their lives, some have and some haven't, especially in the numbers of our military, our civilian fire fighteer, police and emergency services are hero's as well. We don't have a special day for those that have risked thier lives to keep us safe whyen we are caught in a fire, or even thoughg many of you disagree about the police, most are true officers of the law and do enforce them, you would rrather bash them instead, obviously having been caught on the bad side of some law. The Air Force wife that made the gesture is only paying forward a thanks to the fire fighters, as many of us always go out and say thank you for your service to our country, and keeping us safe from harm. In return as you can see, they paid that forward and back to our military. One good turn does deserve another, unfortunately we have so many haters in this country if they aren't involved in the freebie. It was a very kind gestue of the Air Force wife, whether he is retired or still on active duty, it doesn't matter. It's time to think positive, instead of negative about the kind getures thatt people do in this country, instead of spreading hate, lets spread thanks.
