The world's hardest jobs to fillIn the past, we've addressed how the U.S. economy is experiencing a growing skills gap – companies are struggling to find highly skilled workers to fill open positions. Yet this isn't just a U.S. issue – employers across the globe are feeling the effects of unfilled job openings on their bottom line.

According to a new CareerBuilder survey, a significant number of employers in the 10 largest world economies say that extended job vacancies have resulted in lower revenue and productivity and the inability to grow their businesses. When asked which positions were the hardest to fill, employers cited technical fields – namely information technology and engineering – as being some of the most difficult. Other areas mentioned include production, sales, customer service, research and development, creative/design and marketing.

Manual Labor jobs are disappearing. Everything is service or tech related , so you have to have the training and knowledge needed to operate and use the advanced technology and machines. But companies refuse to set up apprenticeship programs or offer any on the job training.

The BIG PROBLEM IS: Wages have been driven so low that people don't have the money to get the training that is needed for those jobs, and the Government is cutting back on student loans because of the budget defict. So it is a Catch 22 situation.

No one mentioned agriculture, but there is a serious lack of agricultural producers, researchers, etc. primarily due to the lack of enthusiasm about salaries, the lack of respect for people involved in agriculture, and the hours that farmers must work in order to get everything done that needs to be done to be successful. Work starts before daylight and ends after sunset on most days. Americans take for grantred the effort that goes into pruducing the foodstuffs they stuff in thnir mouths, and the science behind the most efficient, not to mention, the safest agricultural production on earth. Milk is not produced at the grocery, but by the cow that gets millked at least twice per day by the diairyman who works a minimum of 16 hours/day every day of the year. Cows cannot store milk for long, therefore they must e milked often. And other food producers work equally hard because those fooodstuffs must be harvested in a timely and efficient manner which requires a specialized, well-educated and trained labor force. Without new biotechnologies that aid in disease and pest protection, food would cost twice as much as now. Agricultue is no longer simple, but very complicated. Lack of common sense by EPA has caused Americans to think they are getting pesticides in every spoonful of food, but facts disprove that. More scientists are needed to disprove the inaccuracies leaked by EPA, EWG, and others. The average age of farmers is rising quickly, with few young farmers interested in taking the older farmers places due to the hours necessary to make a living via farming.

This is the price they pay, and deserve to pay, for refusing to provide the education and training at their own expense, as it used to be in the '60s, when we were the global leader.
Not only that, but they're jumping over dollars to pick up pennies. The right person is worth millions per year more than he / she would cost in generous salary.
Ahh, the blindness of greed.
And how can China claim a lack of R&D help, when all they do is steal from us, Japan and Europe, copying everything we've invested in? That kills R&D, when the firms that invest in it see no ROI. Besides, we don't need any more new tech. Everything needed already exists.

There isnt a shotageof engineers in th US there is a shortage of engineers that are willing to work for the low wages offered for the experience and qualifications

I agree. That is why the Corporations lobby for the U.S. Government increase visas and immigration numbers from countries like India that churn out Engineers by the dozen. The greedy Corportations use every trick in the book to avoid paying U.S. Market wages.

It's not a lack of talent that is causing these job issues; it's a lack of incentive and willingness to train.

My post actually refers also to a previous story. One of the most needed employees needed in the US today is an experienced, expert Gun Smith. You can almost name your own salary they are so rare to find.
