Law Professor Arrested, Fired After Bizarre Rant And Shoving Students [VIDEO]

University of Oregon professorCollege campuses may be the sacred centers of free speech, but that speech went sour at the University of Oregon on Thursday, when an adjunct law professor engaged with students holding a pro-immigrantion demonstration. The instructor pushed students, and pocketed one demonstrator's phone, leading to his arrest and an indefinite ban from campus.

A student group at the school, Students Against Imperialism, erected a mock border patrol checkpoint on Thursday to raise awareness of human rights issues related to the U.S.-Mexico border, as well as the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. James L. Olmsted, who taught in the University of Oregon School of Law's environmental and natural resources department, disagreed strongly with the protest, and the conversation quickly escalated.

In videos recorded on students' phones, Olmsted can be seen challenging the protesters. (Warning: The video contains profanity.) "Institutionally, you're no f***ing morally better than I am," he says, after listing non-Western civilizations that were guilty of human rights abuses. He later mocks the students as simply talking about the issue rather than taking more dramatic action.

"If you want this country back, start a f***ing war and take it back," Olmstead states. "Start a war. Get a gun. Shoot me first, I'm right here." Olmsted can then be seen removing his jacket and dropping his motorcycle helmet and pushing a student. When he spots one of the students with her phone out, the professor starts aggressively asking what she plans to do with the photos, before snatching the phone (the audio keeps recording for several more minutes). Students tell him repeatedly that they feel intimidated.

The police arrested Olmsted, and charged him with two counts of physical intimidation and second-degree theft, reports the college newspaper, the Oregon Daily Emerald. On Friday, the university announced that Olmsted's teaching responsibilities had been reassigned to another teacher, and his name was removed from the adjunct faculty website.

Olmsted's attorney Mike Arnold told the Daily Emerald that the videos didn't tell the whole story. "Even with the ability to record parts of a situation with audio and video, you're still going to have huge gaps in a story," he said. One student witness said it appeared that Olmsted was simply trying to challenge the protesters and spark debate, although he admitted that the faculty member took it too far. But others had less generous interpretations.

"We were prepared for having people who were not going to agree with us," Students Against Imperialism co-founder Jaki Salgado told the campus paper. "We never expected anyone to come up to the group and be so blatantly racist."

The professor is REAL lucky he didn't push the wrong person and get punched right in the mouth. Free speech is one thing, assault is something else.

its gotta be tough for intelligent professors seeing their students just jump on a hot button issue on the anti -US side, and then really have no facts to back up anything.especially U of O, so liberal and anti US they are blind to the horrors the countries they support commit on thier people. but as they say, the young are liberal, til they have fmailies and careers and some life experience, then most become more conservative

This is not an "intelligent prfessor." Anyone who so desperate and impotent in attempting to make a point that he shoves and pushes his adversary is not intelligent. He realizes his lack of intelligence and in desperation resorts to violence. The need to threaten, intimidate or physically attack others is the most primitive of animalisitic instincts. Intelligent people long ago evolved and taught ourselves reason, logic and non-violent conflict resolution. It is a defining characteristic of petty criminals, war criminals, psychopaths and American Conservatives that violence is the preferred method of resolution: Whichever of these the "professor" is only he knows for sure.

The hardworking illegals should have to wait and then be put at the back of the first of many lines to get in, not the front of the last line of admission like some want. These hippies , lazy like so many others that were lucky to be born here and just waste their lives, should either start being productive contributors or cross any border you choose and don't come back. Doubt there are any business majors out there protesting. They know the handouts can not be sustained forever. The professor, however, was in the wrong, not for challenging them to think things through but for the physical provocation and intimidation.

The so-called "professor" is free to profess, teach, agree or disagree with anyone. But he is clearly pushing and shoving people with whom he does not agree. This is called PHYSICAL ASSAULT. It is illegal in EVERY civilized society. Those of you who think that this behavior is OK should prepare yourself for someone who is bigger or better armed than you disagreeing with you physically attacking you with fists or a weapon. That is not free speech discourse; it is anarchy and the start of warfare. It appeals only to those Right Wingers who are basically still Neanderthals.

Anyone that can afford to go to college should spend their time studying to better themselves and society rather than boycotting or protesting. I am not aware of exactly what they were trying to get across, however, I do not think protesting is the proper way to do anything. I have spent my time protecting people from attacks and I do not give up my right to protest if the cause is worthy. However, protesting against this Country's right to patrol the southern border is not worthy!
