Pastor Refuses To Pay Tip -- And Receipt Goes Viral [UPDATE]

Employees have on occasion been guilty of doctoring receipts to say offensive things. There was the Hooters receipt that referred to two Korean immigrant customers as "Chinx" (they filed suit), the Maryland RadioShack employee who called a customer an "ugly itch" on her receipt, from "ghettohood, usa."

But customers can get creative on receipts too, as with the Applebee's receipt that advised the server to "Stop eating b*tch!" And like the restaurant customer -- purportedly a pastor -- who scratched out the automatic 18 percent gratuity, and scribbled in: "I Give God 10% Why do you get 18," according to a photograph recently posted to the online forum Reddit, and picked up by the Consumerist.

The self-described server who posted the photo said on the Reddit thread that the gratuity was only included because it was a table of 20, and only parties under eight can choose to tip how much they like. "It's in the computer," he writes, "it's not something I do."

UPDATE: After the receipt went viral, Pastor Alois Bell, of the St. Louis-based Truth in the World Deliverance Ministries, reportedly called up the Applebee's and demanded that everyone involved -- from servers to the managers --be fired, reports Gawker. While the entire staff wasn't fired en masse, the waitress who posted the receipt to Reddit was canned.

"I originally posted the note as a lighthearted joke," the woman told The Consumerist. The woman, identified as "Chelsea," said that she wasn't the pastor's server that night -- but she saw the note and took a photo of it. "I did my best to protect the identity of all parties involved. I didn't break any specific guidelines in the company handbook -- I checked," said Chelsea, who earns $3.50 an hour. With tips, she said, she usually earns less than $9 per hour.

For her part, Bell regretted leaving the note on the bill, calling it "a lapse in my character and judgment" that was "blown out of proportion."

The receipt was for $34.93, although the full table's bill came to over $200, according to the server. The receipts shows the automatic tip of $6.29 as scratched out, and $34.93 entered as the total, along with the word "Pastor."

Christians are in fact more likely to tip badly than diners with no religious affiliation, according to a study on the subject by Michael Lynn of Cornell University. While Christians gave an average of 17.3 percent for good service, a significant minority -- 13 percent -- left less than 15 percent gratuity for good service, which is double the percentage of unaffiliated diners who tip in that range and six times the percentage of Jewish diners who do the same.

Several servers have reported receiving a $10 bill as a tip, only to find it's phony, with the words "SOME THINGS ARE BETTER THAN MONEY" written on the back, "like your eternal salvation, that was brought and paid for by Jesus going to the cross."

Some Christian leaders have even spoken out on the issue, such as Daniel Readle, a pastor at a Baptist church in Cleveland. As he wrote on his blog: "By leaving tracts and not tips, that person is saying to their waiter or waitress, 'You are not a person, but rather just a notch on my belt of evangelistic pride.' "

CORRECTION: An earlier version of this story mistakenly said that a message on an Applebee's receipt was directed at a customer from a server. The message saying "Stop eating b*tch!" was reportedly written by a customer and directed at a server.

The world is filled with cheap-assed bastards... many in the guise of church leaders. C.O.G.I.C. used to have their annual convocation & convention in Memphis. Not only did they NOT tip, but complained incessantly about the "outlandish" prices, small portions and service not being prompt enough, albeit, thousands of them descended upon the restaurants at the same hour! It got so bad, that many of the merchants, especially those in the entertainment district (Beale Street & environs), closed while the convention was in town!

I believe good service should be rewarded, and usually it is understood with a large group. Serving the public is not an easy task, some customers can be very demanding simply because they're paying for a served meal. Get over it, the Gov. taxes at a rate of over 30% and penalties are even higher if you are audited. Try telling IRS what God asks for!

The pastor uses God to excuse himself from being a decent person and tipping this waitress. He is a coward and deserves the ridicule he has received. I will no longer dine at AppleBees because of their response to the pastor's demand that the waitress be fired. Outrageous behavior against women.

Reap what you sew, "Pastor". I bet you wished you would've left $50 by now!
Google the church and send them an email, review the pastor herself, take a stance. I did.
As for Applebee's, this is one of many reasons I stopped patronizing them long ago. They have always treated their employees poorly. I have had a friend and a family member work there - they report the same treatment from different areas of the country.

I think it funny how people get the terms "TIP" and "gratuity" confused. Gratuity is gratitude for the service you received. TIP is actually an acronym To Insure Promptness. Regardless of which term you wish to use or if you even wish to use the terms correctly or not what this pastor did was wrong. Your server gets to pay income tax on a percentage of your bill. "TIPs" are income and are taxed as such whether they get a "TIP" or not. If you give 10% of your bill as gratuity the server really only gets 2% of that as they are taxed 8% of your bill. So if you leave nothing they actually have to pay out of pocket 8% of your bill. So think about that the next time you are out and see the "TIP" line on your receipt. To put into perspective a little better. Let's say the total bill was $100 and you leave 10% ($10), the server will only actually get $2 of that (because they get taxed on 8% of the $100 bill). For those of you who might be a little slower on the math. If your bill is $10 and you leave 10% ($1) the server really only gets 20 cents (because they get taxed on 8% of the $10 bill).

Wrong, you are the one who is math challenged. The server will be taxed on 8% of your bill assuming that it was not put on a credit card , if you tip on a card they are taxed on the exact amout of your tip. Useing your example of the 10% tip on $10. The Irs assumes you tipped 8% and the server is then taxed on that 80 cents at there persoonal tax rete, say 20% . @0% of 80 is 16 centsso the server actually takes home 84 cents.

No I agree that there should be no automatic adding of gratitude no matter how large a party you have, but it was just punkish of Applebee to fire her! Punkish of the pastor to complain about a note he/she left out in public! When you do things out in the open, don't be mad when people see what you do! If you do something in the dark that you are not supposed to do; don't be mad when the light shine on it either!

Dear Gilly... Due to the abundance of selfish, unthinking individuals like the pastor, the need for a standard charge is definately in order! I have watched large groups leave as little as 10 bucks to completely stiffing the staff on many occassions... which inturn hendered my meal and service due to their petty "errands" they kept sending the staff on. Not to mention that the FEDS have placed such high tax demands on wait staff, making them claim at least 10% of your bill as a tip! I have never seen a "millionaire" waiter in my life!
Just so happens that dear friends are waiters, usually happy people and enjoy the services they provide - however, most "Religious Types", Teachers, and Government Employees are best served with a few grains of salt as they are the worst tippers.

Nathan, I agree with everything you said, and should I add, I'm glad you only said "most" religious types are the worst tippers. I am a christian and have been in the customer service business before. (I was a hairdresser). Unfortunately, it's the same scenario there as well. Because of that, I'm a good tipper. I always tip 20% and usually a little bit more than that when the service is exceptional. I know how hard servers work and how little they are paid. My way of thinking is, if you cannot afford to go out to eat AND leave a decent tip, don't go out. Some people may only get that rare night out once every few months due to financial reasons, but they need to be able to budget in a tip for their server as well.
