College Kid's Amazing, Plucky Cover Letter For Wall Street Internship Goes Viral

How about you hire a kid with a strong work ethic, a top education, and a passion for your particular line of business? Honestly, most Ivy-leaguers or top 20 kids bust their asses to get into a good school and have dedicated time to getting work experience at other firms/businesses. Passing them up for being "dishonest" (or whatever label you may ascribe to them) is foolish. There are many kids who, like this one, major in finance at not so amazing universities and have less than stellar work experience; I can't comprehend how any of them could genuinely hope to land a job/internship without write an essay exactly like this one. My point? This kid isn't that unique. The only reason this kid is "honest" is that he has little else to justify an acceptance for this internship. The language is pretty basic in it's attempts at emotional manipulation, and aside from that, is fairly cliche and uninspiring. The kid is not special in any way, but wants to get into investment banking because he works hard (like most other applicants). Honestly, if a kid telling you that he's an under-qualified applicant makes him an "instant classic" in your eyes, then I hope your business fails.

Remember the Will Smith movie, "Pursuit Of Happiness" ? This was based on a real life man who had nothing to offer on paper but was so empowering at the interview that he got an opportunity to work in a stock brokerage firm on Wall Street. His determination and eventual success made him rich.

I believe that this young job applicant will work harder and with more success than the run of the mill job applicants with experience.

Best of luck to him. I would like to see followups when he is hired by a company.
