Transgender Teacher, Mark Krolikowski, Sues After Being Branded 'Worse Than Gay'

Mark Krolikowski transgender teacher fired

By Russell Goldman

A transgender teacher is suing a New York City Catholic school after more than 30 years working there, claiming that it wrongfully terminated him for growing out his hair, painting his fingernails and being "worse than gay."

In a lawsuit, Mark Krolikowski, 59, alleges that after 32 years of teaching at St. Francis Prep in Queens, N.Y., and receiving numerous accolades for his work -- including leading students in a musical performance for Pope Benedict XVI -- he was fired last year after the parents of a ninth grader complained about his appearance.

Krolikowski remains anatomically male and routinely wore suits and neckties to the school where he taught music, social studies and a class on human sexuality. He also wore earrings and manicured his nails in "a feminine style" according to court documents.

In 2011, Krolikowski was summoned to the office of the principal, Brother Leonard Conway, where Krolikowski revealed the intention to start coming to work dressed as a woman. According to Krowlikowski's lawsuit, Conway told the teacher that being transgender was "worse than gay" and that Krolikowski could no longer appear at public events if it was as a woman.

"He is extremely upset given the dedication and devotion he showed to the school for 30 years," Krolikowski's lawyer, Andrew Kimler, told ABCNews.com.

Kimler said that although Krolikowski worked for a private, religious school, the teacher was still protected under city and state discrimination laws.

Kimler would not reveal the damages that Krolikowski hopes to claim through the lawsuit.

A lawyer for the school said the school had cause to fire the teacher and Krolikowski was not relieved due to gender identity.

"His employment was terminated for appropriate non-discriminatory reasons," said the school's attorney, Phil Sempervivo.

We all know that he was fired for the way he looked. It's pretty obvious everyone is judged by the way he or she looks. And then we teach our children to "treat others the way you want to be treated" when adults themselves hardly ever preach what they teach. Hypocrisy at its finest. Why do they just slap god in the face? ;)

What a disgusting freak ! That "thing" should not be allowed near any kids at any time ever. The school was 100% right to dump it. Case closed

I know people who have gone through gender transition. Depending on your occupation, they often take some time off to go through transition and then transfer elsewhere so the change does not occur right in front of a vulnerable popultion..not because they will be harmed by this but because they may be confused and it is not necessarily the purpose of that setting to go into these issues (for example I knew a psychiatrist ina hospital who changed as well as a teacher). The posychiatrist was able to transition with the support of colleagues but did not treat patients during that time. The teacher took time off and then transferred to a different school. Both peple in teansition adn their employers need to take an educated view of this issue. And btw, they are not freaks...it is a medical condition which is treatable with gender reassignment. The twpo people I knew were 2 of hte kindest people I kow, both EXPERTS in their field, and totally not crazy except for their profound unhappiness with the bodies they were born into.

A person who is going through such a tumultuous process certainly won't be able to devote his full attention to teaching his students. Sexual preference is one thing, but gender swapping is something else entirely.

He has most likely been wearing womens underwear for years under his work clothes and womens clothes at home. Only now is he brave enough to start showing the world. Why is the affectations of clothing the thing that determines sex? This guy needs a serious make-over,his 1920's flapper haircut needs updating. I call no man a fool, but!?

I am so furious over this! I can't believe this guy. I mean... that coat just ruins his whole new "look". Maybe a nice tweed jacket or a bright festive floral blouse would accent his new hairstyle.
I thought it was Gene Hackman in drag.

Those controversial fringe group gender confused should never be allowed around our children. It is a problem that needs to stop so our kids will be safe from their nonsense.

Children learn what they are taught, if you teach them what these folks go thru, they are easily accepting, its the parents that turn their little heads towards disapproval. The same as being gay, they do not turn your children into anything other than educated in what field they are teaching.
Open up your eyes, this is a new world, let our children decide what works for them, don't you decide..
