Sex Surrogate Cheryl Cohen Greene, 68: I've Slept With Over 900 People

Cheryl Cohen Greene

Cheryl Cohen Greene is a 68-year-old loving grandmother and cancer survivor who's been happily married for 33 years. In that time, she's slept with hundreds of other men in her conjugal bed, and transformed many of their lives.

Greene is a sex surrogate, treating patients with sexual difficulties through talk, touching and intercourse, for $300 per two-hour session. Greene's story has now reached hundreds of thousands of people, thanks to the movie "The Sessions," about the treatments that she (played by Helen Hunt) provided journalist and poet Mark O'Brien (John Hawkes), who was disabled by polio as a boy.

Paralyzed from the neck down and tethered to an iron lung, O'Brien sought Greene's services as a 38-year-old virgin who hoped to find some comfort in his own skin, and feel a little more deserving of love. Greene talks about her experiences with O'Brien, as well as several other of her patients, in her memoir An Intimate Life: Sex, Love, and My Journey as a Surrogate Partner, published in November.

In a profile in the Los Angeles Times, Greene describes entering the profession after a friend gave her a copy of Surrogate Wife: The Story of a Masters & Johnson Sexual Therapist and the Nine Cases She Treated. Since then she's slept with over 900 people for money in her home near UC Berkeley. Her husband, Bob Greene, a retired postal worker, has no issue with his wife's career -- he met her as a client, after all, when he struggled with erectile issues after serving in Vietnam.

Vena Blanchard, the president of the International Professional Surrogates Association, which certifies sex surrogates, told The Daily Beast that more than half of the organization's clients are middle-aged virgins. "These people are socially handicapped," she said. "They need encouragement in a safe, gentle environment."

Greene says that a quarter of her patients have never had sex before, others have problems with ejaculation.

William Masters and Virginia Johnson, two of the most influential sex researchers of all time, first popularized the idea of sex surrogacy in the 1970s. Their ideas became embroiled in controversy, however, and the AIDS epidemic of the '80s further reduced the career's appeal.

The number of practicing partner-therapists certified by the International Professional Surrogates Association dwindled from a peak of 200 to 300 members to less than 40 today, according to the Times. But among one group, the profession has become notably more popular: men.

Sex surrogacy has long been a female field, but now 35 to 40 percent of IPSA surrogates are men, Blanchard told MyHealthNewsDaily. And women perhaps more than men could benefit from hands-on sex therapy; in a review of 32 different studies, Elisabeth Lloys, a professor of biology and philosophy of science at Indiana University, found that a third of women never have an orgasm during intercourse.

A few male sex surrogates have even found some celebrity. Investment banker turned "psychosexual bodyworker" Mike Lousada became the talk of London with his vaginal massages, even impressing famed feminist Naomi Wolf (Lousada only touches clients with his hands).

Greene is enjoying her sudden celebrity too, and some of the twists that her line of work has brought. She likely never imagined that in her older years she would find herself in Helen Hunt's mansion, helping the Oscar-winner prepare for the role by showing her the right way to massage her boyfriend's feet.

good for her and the people she is helping. not everyone has the luxury of having a sex partner or a body that can function sexually. no judgement here. ......

To all you bible preaching god fearing self described experts, you don't know dick!!! Hate to break it to you but there is no light at the end of the tunnel or St.peter waiting to register you into the "heaven logbook" with big fluffy clouds and a golden gate. You people make me laugh lol! If believing in something without one shed of proof and gives you that insurance policy feeling like your actually gonna float off somewhere after you kick it...keep dreaming cause that's all that is, a dream! When you die you die, that's it!!! But for the incredibly naive, why don't you take a page of your"good book" where it talks about judging others and that you'll be judged as well. So according to your fabulous book of lies... Shut the hell up and live YOUR OWN LIVES ! To the one that sounds like a new drink flavor at Starbucks ...yaa can I get a shakia monae with with whipped cream &sprinkles. Like you never puffed on your BF's hammer and got your own special shot of flavor in your mouth or face, or had it in you azz... Pleaseee! You wanna talk dirty. You and nicolet were just as dirty and prostitutes too the last time you ate a free meal on a date or a drink bought for you in da club! Don't let me for get Edmund &Richard the turd( you must think a lot of yourself lol) sins were created for the rich and powerful to take what they wanted and to persecute who they chose for personally gain.GEE could it be that they got rich and powerful by sinning??? Germans did they same thing to the Jews not 70-80 yrs ago by saying Jews carried diseases so hitler could convince others and take over Europe and then the world. Ofcourse hitlers broke ass couldn't afford that yet so he stole everything including the gold in their teeth to acquire wealth then power! I think I'd rather live in a world where people live and let live, not forge hateful opinions of others and get pissed off of what they might do with their lives.Good morals is about helping others and that's what this woman chose to do all her life despite what some good for nothing know it alls think. My point is ANYONE can be judge a sinner, it just depends on who's doing the judging. Butttt... Lets just say there is heaven and hell(as if) I'd much rather burn in hell with all the cool fun people than be stuck in heaven with the rest of the hypocrites & self proclaimed judges that think their **** don't stink!!!! And if I didn't give you hillbillies enough to say, wait for it...........JESUS WAS GAY.

I am a theologian and scripture scholar. Mary Magdalen is never mentioned as a prostitute in any of the four gospel accounts or acts or letters of Greek Scripture. Historically, there has been the tendency to make a composite of Mary Magdalen, the un-named prostitute and even Mary, the sister of Lazarus, which is unsupported by scripture. This composite perhaps has been promulgated even more so by a sermon given by Pope Gregory the Great in the 6th century. There are folks in the Catholic Church who continue to hold on to this interpretation, often by linking the placement of the stories to one another and/or linking the name and narratives of "Mary" to a singular person when Mary (Miriam, actually) was a very common female name in ancient culture. Nonetheless, today, exegetes generlly agree it is a faulty interpretation.

And, although prostitution per se is not condemned by name in the Greek Scriptures (New Testament), references to fornication and adultery are usually the ones that are utilized to justify the sinfulness of prostitution given that sex outside the confines of marriage was indeed considered sinful, and each is listed as a sin in various verses throughout Scripture (you can google these verses). To infer that prostitution is a sexual act outside the confines of marriage, and therefore a sin, would not be illogical nor unreasonable. The woman adulteress, she is not called a prostitute, is told specifically by Jesus, that he does not condemn her but she should "go and sin no more." Your understanding of the noncondemnation may stem from Jesus' use of the word condemnation. However, the context of the use of this word is condemnation by physical death for adultery (as in this specific narrative), which was permissible by Mosaic law in the form of stoning. This narrative is initiated by the scribes & Pharisees bringing this adulteress woman to Jesus to test him with regard to his fidelity to the Mosiac law, and find him fault in order to bring charges against him. (This is clearly the intention as stated in the gospel account of John.)

Finally, it does not appear anywhere in Scripture that prostitution is "blessed by God."

Thank you for the opportunity to provide some clarification with regard to these topics.

This is prostutition idc what anyone says. You can help through talking, sex therapy but sexual intercourse with hundreds of people is just dirty. Spreading STD's and everything else, and for a spouse to believe it's just simply helping people they're just completely stupid.

I know it seems that way to you and I wish it didn't. I am paralyzed from my chest down and have had my own problems that would have improved greatly with the help of a sex therapist. I guess this isn't something people understand or care for unless they are(or were) in a situation where this would seem helpful. In the hospital were I went to recover from my accident there were young kids that just had an accident that left them in the same condition as me. They will go through puberty paralyzed..can you imagine what it must be like for them?..Some not being able to move from the neck down. While there growing into adulthood they probably haven't left the security of there home and the love and care of there parents at there bed side. These people have the same desires as you or me but the chance of acting them out and learning from them is not there. The majority of work these therapist do is for these people who have gone through life never knowing they can experience joy and happiness through sexuality. Another certified therapist is working with the patient at the same time period to help him or her handle the new feelings and experiences that come from learning they are able to please another person and be pleased themselves in a intimate way. So with two therapist that have degrees from collage (only one being a "sex surrogate". The other is a therapist that has never done surrogacy) there is a far gap between the "street walkers" and them. They are able to have compassion and spend time to most importantly teach and give the person the lost lessons they would have had if they would have been "able bodied" going through life. Unfortunately it is only for a set number of sessions.
