N.Y. Farmers Hire Robots Because They Can't Use Illegal Immigrants Anymore

In recent years, it's become politically popular for states to take a tough stance against employers that hire "illegal immigrants" -- also referred to as undocumented workers. But is that actually helping American workers? In at least one case, the answer is definitely no.

A group of dairy farmers in upstate New York has found a creative end run around the government's penalties for hiring undocumented workers by employing robot farmers. Thirty New York dairy farmers have bought European-manufactured robots and put them to work milking their herds, according to a report by WGRZ.com.

The robots cost $200,000 to $500,000 to install, depending upon how many were purchased at a time, and the farmers are using the robots for $10-an-hour, entry-level jobs that immigrant workers normally held. The crackdown on undocumented workers, the farmers say, has made filling these jobs tough.

But isn't the cost of the robots prohibitive? Why not just raise workers' wages instead?

The farmers believe that in the long run the robots will be worth the investment, as there is a sharp increase in demand for milk due to a new-found popularity of Greek yogurt.

"The bottom line is -- all of this yogurt,'' George Haier, an Eden, N.Y., farmer told New York station WGRZ.

Pam, please explain how illegal alien workers helped American workers! The illegal aliens took the jobs formerly held by American workers, and American workers are forced to provide all types of benefits to the illegal aliens from taxpayers funds. At least the robots will not have kids to educate, or provide medical and other services too. Also the robots will have to be maintained, and those jobs could go to American workers if our government would simply enact E-Verify to deny those jobs to illegal alien, and if the government would put a moratorium on all immigration until the 23 million American citizens and legal immigrants who want a full time job but can't find one are finally able to put food on the table and help their kids achieve their American dream. Just think of it, Americans able to achieve the American Dream instead of loosing out to illegal aliens and an endless flood of legal immigrants. What do you think Pam, should American workers have first priority for jobs in their own country?

If you look at your arm, you will notice that there are few muscles in your fingers, instead the muscles that work your fingers are in your arm. To make a similar robot hand/arm, you need to use rotary servos that duplicate these muscles. I built the first mechanical equivalent of this on my apartment kitchen table in 1984 (28 years ago).
Since then, I've aquired a garage and unlike Steve Jobs who only focused on computers, I have answers.
Yes, I have the technology to build "full-up" human replacement robots. It's worth more zeros than will go into a common calculator.

I find it hard to believe with massive unemployment, that farmers are unable to find people to fill these jobs.

I'm guessing since illegals were hired there is zero unemployment in the area. Americans are lazy, so this is the reason to cut entitlement programs and make supplemental the only way to go. Any employer of illegals should lose their business or pay severe fines....Wait didn't Obama's cabinet picks have issues with that four years ago?

Q. How much does it cost U.S. taxpayers to provide health care for illegal immigrants?
A. Billions of dollars are estimated to be spent each year, although data are scarce on both the costs and use of health care. Transient living conditions, undercounting of migrant workers and desire to avoid contact with government agencies limit the nation's ability to accurately determine the costs of their medical care.

In some hospitals, as much as two-thirds of total operating costs are for uncompensated care for illegal aliens. As a result, hundreds of emergency departments have closed. In Los Angeles, for example, 10 hospitals have closed in the past five years because of uncompensated care.

Congress in 2005 authorized $1 billion in funding over four years to help physicians and hospitals recover costs of providing emergency care to illegal immigrants. This was a critical first step in recognizing the growing funding crisis in the nation's emergency departments, which affects everyone's access to emergency care.

In Parkland Memorial Hospital Dallas, the second busiest maternity ward in the United States, 70% of the women giving birth were illegal aliens. That added up to 11,200 babies for which Medicaid kicked in 34.5 million dollars to deliver these babies, the feds another 9.5 million and Dallas taxpayers tossed in 31.3 million. The average illegal patient is 25 years and giving birth to her second anchor baby.

If they used to use illegal's, knowingly, to do their milking they should be hit with the full extent of the law. What didn't/don't they know about it being AGAINST the law to hire ILLEGAL immigrants? To top it all off, they're thumbing their noses at the government just talking about it.
I'd never buy any product from anyone who I know is using illegal workers. For ANY excuse they may want to make.
