RI Cops Probed For Making Teens Do Pushups As Punishment [VIDEO]

Rhode Island police pushups teens

Four police officers in Rhode Island are being investigated for making five boys do pushups on the side of a street as punishment for damaging a mailbox.

Acting North Providence Police Chief Paul Martellini says a woman called police Friday to report her mailbox was damaged. Officers then pulled over a car full of teenagers.

Mayor Charles Lombardi told Providence radio station WPRO-AM that the officers thought the best way to reprimand them was for them to do pushups.

A neighbor videotaped the stop and posted it online. It was first reported by WJAR-TV in Providence.

Lombardi said officers took the law into their own hands and called it unacceptable and that he wants the officers suspended.

Lombardi told the radio station, "You can't fix stupid. I think that's the only explanation here."

Martellini has ordered an internal investigation.

Sometimes, whether right or wrong, the Police will seek to make everyone at the scene of a dispute happy. This is what it looks like to me - the kids won't have any long term damage on their record, and the mailbox owners feel like the cops sought some kind of punishment. Unfortunately, it was a no-win situation. If the cops had arrested the vandals, and the prosecutor let them go because it wasn't worth the time to prosecute anyone, the mailbox owners would have felt shafted. If the cops had arrested the vandals, the prosecutor took them to court, and the vandals were ordered to 1 month behind bars, people would have cried "for a mailbox??". Sometimes, there is no way for the Police to win.

Fire the mayor, give the cops raises, make the kids pay for the mailbox and fine the neighbor for violating privacy.

Rare anywhere in the USA. This is how many of our respectable citizens are what they are due to some community minded officers. They are to be commended!

Cops did the right thing..sounds like the Mayor is goinfg after that all important anti-cop vote..next time arrest the perps and tie up the legal system for a while--any questions as to why many today's young people laugh at the law, law enforcement and the judicial system..

That why a lot of teens are jerks!! When they did something wrong they can't get the proper punishment, so they never think it's a big deal! When someone finally wants to give them the punishment they deserve, they get suspended. This is absolutely ridiculous!!!!

Good job to the cops!!! People always find something to complain about, regardless. Instead of this guy videotaping and trying to make the cops look bad, he should have stopped and complimented them for teaching these kids a lesson, rather than arresting them. I think in addition to the push-ups, they should also be given some community service work!
All due respect Mayor, but I think you need to re-evaluate your comments!
