U.S. Weekly Jobless Claims Dropped Again

WASHINGTON, Nov 1 (Reuters) - The number of Americans filing new claims for unemployment benefits fell last week, a sign the labor market's slow recovery was gaining traction.

Initial claims for state unemployment benefits dropped 9,000 to a seasonally adjusted 363,000, the Labor Department said on Thursday. That was below the median forecast in a Reuters poll of 370,000.

An analyst from the department said New Jersey and Washington, D.C., did not turn in data due to the mammoth storm Sandy, which hit the Northeast earlier this week. The Labor Department estimated results for the state and for the nation's capital.

Economists have said the storm could lead to volatility in jobless claims over the coming weeks.

There were no signs the storm had any impact on last week's data, the Labor Department analyst said.

The four-week moving average for jobless claims, which smooths out volatility, dropped 1,500 to a 367,250. Economists generally think a reading below 400,000 points to an increase in employment.

The country's weak labor market has dominated its presidential campaign and Friday's employment report will give the last jobless rate before Tuesday's election. Polls show a very tight race between President Barack Obama and Republican challenger Mitt Romney.

The U.S. economy has recently shown some signs of health, with consumers spending more freely and home construction picking up. But business investment sank in the third quarter, a sign companies lack confidence in the strength of the economic recovery.

The prior week's estimate for jobless claims was revised slightly higher to show 3,000 more applications than previously reported.

Continuing claims for jobless benefits rose 4,000 in the week ended Oct. 20 to a seasonally adjusted 3.263 million, the Labor Department said.

So if I understand correctly good news for America is bad news for Romney and Republicans- that's all you need to know- Republicans want badly for the nation to fail. I've had the unfortunate privilege of watching Fox news and listening to Rush Limbaugh for a project I'm doing on media bias- and its just sad and pathetic the lengths some of these so called pundits will go too- they are gleefully rooting for horrible news, just to win an election- that is beyond sad. Then for the last five days when the Northeast coast of America dealing with catastrophe beyond belief- the Knuckleheads on Fox news are spewing bile about e-mails about Benghazi....what.. huh? Keep up- people are suffering here in America- there will be time to deal with the emails sent to the State department...blah blah blah. I swear it’s like watching the Bizarro World news- I have no idea what in the world they are talking about on Fox News- they really do live in a bubble.

I had to lay off two more employees today. Just about everyone I know is doing the same. Could it be that unemployment insurance has run its course with a lot of people around the same time? If there is an upswing in the economy, it surely is passing us by. The numbers are deceiving.

Ibama paid off the heads of the reporting dept of these numbers! ... There I thought maybe if I lied, twisted the facts like seemingly ALL RR-TGOP-Conserv commenters do, they'd at least gain .00001% of cradibiklity through my words so they don't feel so idiotic ..And appear SO 'out-of-touch-eith-reality that the men in white coats take them away for a "rest" so they can at least keep working to feed their families and not leave them to the horrible fate of being left on those evil' entitlements, like Food Stamps and Medicaid while they are tucked amongh the rubber walls .... HEAVY SARCASM INTENDED. I'd really MUCH rather comment in mor civil, straight forward, mature, informed way, but I'm reaching a point where they make it very hard to resist.

0.2% change is certainly a reason to celebrate. New claims down 9000, prior week adjusted up 3000, and continuing claims up 4000, and that is a trend? A signal? Huh?
