Sounds like office politics is a job in itself. Too bad people can't just do their jobs without worrying about every little word they speak. You should be able to concenrate on the job you were hired to do.

Well, last January I started work in a manufacturing plant because it was the only game in town(I im a carpenter by trade) and they had just opened the factory,so practically everyone was the "new guy" ,including the boss.what do you do in that situation?
Coot,For real, keep quite and do your job. If you don't have a dog in the fight stay out and don't even discuss it. The deal on negative people works the same every where. In the building trades, you do a job and move on. But in manufacturing, you could be working with the same people for the rest of your career. If you get sucked into the negative crowd, you will be viewed negatively by the higher ups. It can be hidden just so long. Be viewed as someone with a positive attitude that can be counted on to produce. You will last longer, maybe moved up and will be a lot happier.
