First Lady Michelle Obama To Announce Additional Hiring Push For Vets

WASHINGTON -- First lady Michelle Obama is traveling to the electoral battleground of Florida on Wednesday to announce that 2,000 businesses around the country have hired or trained more than 125,000 military veterans and spouses in the past year, exceeding a White House goal of 100,000 by the end of next year. Buoyed by those numbers, Mrs. Obama planned to announce that the same companies have committed to hire or train an additional 250,000 veterans and military spouses by 2014, the White House said. That includes hiring or training 50,000 military spouses within three years -- and helping them keep those jobs as families move from one duty station to another.

"More and more businesses are recognizing that hiring veterans is good for their bottom line, and they are making bold commitments to bring veterans into their ranks," said Brad Cooper, executive director of the first lady's Joining Forces effort.

Mrs. Obama planned to announce the new commitments at Naval Station Mayport in Jacksonville. She was to be joined by Vice Adm. Scott Van Buskirk, chief of naval personnel.

In April 2011, the first lady and Jill Biden, wife of the vice president, launched Joining Forces to encourage Americans to support military families and veterans. The White House said the hiring push has helped to reduce unemployment among veterans from 8.6 percent in July 2011 to 6.9 percent last month.

Labor Department statistics show the unemployment rate for veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan is at 8.9 percent, above the national rate of 8.3 percent. For veterans under 24, the unemployment rate was 19.9 percent in July.

I believe these companies got tax incentives (tax credits) for hiring veterans. This is great, whatever we can do to take care of our vets. Now Mrs. Obama should talk with her hubby about removing the decreased medical benefits and increased medical premiums he slapped vets with. This is a great vote buying tactic. If they really wanted to buy votes maybe Obama and the Dems should've been concerned about the lack of jobs, lousy economy of the ENTIRE country.

Buying the Presidency one special interest group at a time....

Well, I see the Republicans are out in full force tonight with their myopic look on the world. It was the previous administration that created so many veterans and then dropped the economy into the tank. My son, a veteran, was laid off when his job was sent to India; he has struggled to keep afloat for the past four years; now he is in a government retraining program that will hopefully get him a permanent job and out of the poverty he has been forced to endure, with only part time jobs or temporary employment, since June of 2008. He served his country for 8 years and was discharged honorably, where is the trickle down job that was promised by the Bush administration for tax cuts to the wealthy???? I applaud the efforts of this administration for their determination to help the people of this country, despite the obstructions placed in their way by the Republican Party. I was a life long Conservative until we got Mr Bush and his band of fascists, and yes they were dictatorial and suppressed the populace through terror and censorship with a belligerent nationalism; it was either their way or you were un American. Bring back the good old days of Norman Rockwell, that, was my era. If I don't like your viewpoint I may argue it but I'm sure not going to shoot you over it ..... this is America, we have the right to disagree without being disagreeable and I would never dream of disparaging the office of the President of the United States, the way I see and hear so many Republicans do now. Shame on you all!

Anything that anybody can do to help Vets is matter who it's from or for what should be accepted and welcomed...even if it only helps ONE Vet - that is a step in the right direction.

Contributing money to also train the SPOUSE of a vet takes money away from other vets! Let's concentrate on the VETS FIRST! It's not like they'll still be married within the next five years!
