If you've recently lost your job in Indiana, you may be eligible for Indiana Unemployment Insurance benefits. This is a guide to filing your claim for Indiana unemployment benefits. Since each situation may have its own unique circumstances, make sure you check with the contact numbers and websites listed below to make sure you get the maximum benefits you can claim.
Unemployed Indiana workers can file an initial claim for unemployment benefits one of two ways:
File your claim right away after you've stopped working – don't delay. Your claim starts the week you file. Unemployment benefits are not retroactive, so if you delay you may lose benefits.
When you file your initial unemployment benefit application, you will need the following information:
- Name & address
- SSN & date of birth
- Name, address, phone number and dates worked for most recent employer
- Reason for separation
- If you were discharged from the military in the last 2 years, you'll need Copy #4 of your DD Form 214
- If you were a Federal employee in the last 2 years, you'll need SF 8 or SF 50 (or W2 or pay stubs)
- If you are not a US Citizen, you'll need your Alien Registration Number, expiration, and type
- State issued ID if you are applying at a WorkOne Office
- Suggestion: Most recent check stub from last employer
Filing Your Weekly Claim:
After your initial filing, you will receive a Wage transcript and Benefit Computation from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Indiana unemployment benefits are calculated as 5% of the first $2,000 you earned in the highest quarter of your base period (4 calendar quarters out of the last 5 quarters), plus 4% of the amount over $2,000 in the highest quarter. The maximum Indiana unemployment weekly benefit is $390 per week.
You can file your weekly Claim Voucher form online, or in person
You will need to verify that you have registered for work at IndianaCAREERconnect.com, and have uploaded an online resume. You will also need to verify your job search efforts, showing how you looked for work. Claim weeks are Sunday through Saturday.
Beware of the Waiting Week. Your first week of benefits is called a "waiting week" – this means you will not be paid benefits during your first week of eligibility, but you must still file a claim to get credit for waiting.
All payments are made on a Visa debit card. After your eligibility is established, you should receive your debit card within 21 days after filing your initial claim. After the initial 21 days, funds should be disbursed to your debit card within a few days after your weekly Claim Voucher filing.
You may be eligible for Hoosier Healthwise, a state sponsored health program for families - learn more at The FSSA. Filing for extensions:
As your regular unemployment benefits come close to being completed, you will receive a letter describing eligibility and instructions to file for extended unemployment benefits from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. You will need to bring this letter and your State issued ID to your local Indiana WorkOne office to apply for extended unemployment benefits in person.
When you return to work, file for credit for the remaining few days you didn't work. Then, just stop filing - when you stop weekly filing, your unemployment benefits automatically end.FAQ:
