The Trouble With Tech: Too Few Women [Infographic]

It's one of those recurring debates in the digital age: Why are so few women working in technology?

Just 9 percent of chief information officers, or CIOs, are women, down from 11 percent last year and 12 percent in 2010, according to a survey released Monday by tech-staffing firm Harvey Nash Group (via Reuters).

About a third of the companies polled said their information technology unit had no women at all within management, yet only half of firms said that they consider women to be underrepresented in their IT departments.

More broadly within the field, women hold just 24 percent of high-tech jobs, according to a recent analysis of 2010 data; that's down from nearly 26 percent in 2001. And yet there is no shortage of women involved with social media networks, according to a recent Nielsen report (via FastCompany).

Trends in education suggest that there's little improvement on the horizon, with the percentage of undergraduate degrees in computer science earned by women having declined since 1984.

Many people blame the decline on tech's reputation as a male-dominated field, where casual sexism reigns.

One in 10 Fortune 500 companies, which include many tech firms, have no women in the boardroom, although the two largest Fortune 500 companies run by women are both in the tech sector: Hewlett-Packard Co., which named Meg Whitman (pictured above) its CEO last fall; and IBM, where Virginia "Ginni" Rometty took over as chief executive earlier this year.

But is the outlook as bleak as the numbers suggest? This infographic below from Rad Campaign, an Internet design and social-media strategy firm, offers some interesting insights.

Feminist crap. Why are there never any articles talking about the lack of men involved with education, especially early childhood. That should be a much bigger concern than the number of women in "tech"... which isn't a concern at all.

I remember reading something about men's jobs and women's jobs that says it all. The only job a woman can't do is be a sperm donor and the only job a man can't do is be a wet nurse. Everything else is anyone's game. Nuff said.

Equal rights are so silly. There is no way anyone can be equal. Women can't be equal with men . Men can't be equal with other men. To be my equal you have to be the same sex, same age, same height, same weight, same color hair, same color eyes. You have to have the same education, with the same grade average, the same work history for the same company(s). You must have the same wife, the same children. Drive the same car, have the same home in the same state. The list could go for ever.
Why do women want so much to be men? Men don't seem to want to be women. We need new classifications. Shemen, menshe, or leave a persons sex out of the equation. How about everyone can apply for the same things. Best person wins. No special rules becaus someone is a women, or smaller, or anything else.

Something is very wrong with you and your thinking. Most women do not want to be men just as most men do not want to be women. Equal rights is not the mess that you have written above. You should have been born 200 years ago and you probably would be happy. Equal rights means same opportunities for both men and women. Of course there are jobs that men are far superior to woman which deal with physical strength. However most jobs women can do as well as men and sometimes better. Men llike you would just like to see the woman at home and barefooted and pregnant, but in your case would want her to be working and bringing home the money too. Wake up man, if you have children, you want them to work hard and not recieve the pay that males doing the same job get and do you not want to see your daughter get the jobs in which they are promoted to the next level according to their job performance. Your spewing that women want to be men is so untrue. They only want the same pay for the same work and be promoted at the same rate. Today many families are two parents that work to better their lives and their families. Your concept of equality are very distorted. Wake up and join the 21st century pal. Too many of you still think women are way below them. Well sonny, God knew that women, even the puniest one could tollerate giving birth than most any man, that is why women bear children and not whimps like you. I too am happy that they have kids and not men. Ouch !!!! I am starting to believe that if more women were in Congress and the Senate, there would be less corruption and more work would get done. There are some women in the Senate that of course have done very little for the people of their state.
