Wealthy Banker Reportedly Tells Waitress To 'Get A Real Job'

get a real job receipt waitressUpdate: On Monday evening, the True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach released a statement, which called the receipt "altered and exaggerated." The "Future Ex Banker" blog and Twitter account, which originally posted and sent out the image, have both been taken down.

It's tough to be a food server. Most restaurants don't offer health insurance or paid sick days. And if you're a woman, you face rampant harassment and discrimination, according to a new study. And even though you spend the whole day on your feet, perhaps making a sub-minimum wage of $2.13 an hour, at least one jerk out there purportedly thinks it's not a real job.

Earlier this month, a waitress at True Food Kitchen in Newport Beach, Calif., reportedly was tipped $1.33 on a $133.54 bill -- significantly below the 15 to 20 percent standard gratuity. The diner then purportedly annotated the bill with a career "tip": "GET A REAL JOB."

Twitterer @FutureExBanker sent the receipt to Eater New York's Receiptrocity series, as evidence that his or her boss "so loathes the 99%, my jerk boss tips exactly 1%." FutureExBanker even started a blog to track his employer's regular toolishness, although at some point in the last couple of days, both the man's blog and Twitter account have been shut down. Given the media attention that his boss' latest alleged fiendishness received, it's possible that he found out about his underling's online dissidence.

Given the boss' apparent temperament, it's unlikely he would take the discovery well.

You can tell a lot about a person's true character by how he/she treats service people. This elitist p**** is the one who should get a real job. Pompous, self-entitled, judgmental and, in the end, just a tacky cheapskate. I hope he comes back, gets the same waitress, she recognizes him and he gets a little something extra in his food--and, for real justice, the owner adds a reasonable tip into the bill. If he refuses to pay it, throw his butt out in the street with an invitation to NEVER come back.

I know we are all supposed to despise how they do things in "socialist":Europe, but here goes anyway. In many Eu countries, at least the North Central countries, a gratuity is automatically added to your bill, along with a value added tax (VAT). The gratuity on average amounts ot about 10 percent. The value added amount can range from 15 to 18 percent. The gratuity and tax amounts are not listed on the bill. Customers are not really aware of these charges sincel they are invisible. Meals cost about the same, although food is more likely to be fresh and less chemicalized there. There is a simple statement on menus and bills that says gratuity and VAT are included. Poople are not expected to leave big tips. Many round up change and give it to the server (typically one or two perent of total) .
Restaurant service in Northern Europe is radically different , and in my view, generally far superior, than in the US. When people go to a restaurant not in an obvius tourist zone, it is expected that they will stay the evening. No second seating is anticipated. Customers are not rushed to read menus, place orders, or gobble down their food and leave as they are in America. A euro waiter or waitress will never say as you sit down "can I getcha somethin ta drink". They will not come back in a minute or two with the menu and say' "do ya need minute or two"? Service is pleasantly slower, and nobody rushes you tomake food choices , eat quickly and leave as soon as possible. Many of them will actually talk to you if business allows. Life is enjoyable.

... and by the way, I'm REALLY wondering how the waitress herself responded, since it happened to her. But no, I guess what she thinks doesn't matter in this. I just can't stand your articles.

This article is really, really poorly written. From what I can figure out..... Apparently the diner is an tightwad a**, the diner's employee got ahold of the receipt and made an issue about what a tightward he is, the waitress is mentioned only in passing in this article, and does the "99%" mean the rest ofd us who aren't rich? I'm sorry Ms. Gordon, but every single time I read one of your articles, I'm left scratching my head, searching for missing pieces of the story, and looking for answers. This story is about a rich guy's employee, not much to do with the waitress, and is certainly not headlined as such. Talk about getting a real job.....

"Given the boss' apparent temperament, it's unlikely he would take the discovery well"

ANY boss, regardless of politics or personal beliefs, would immediately fire any employee maintaining an online resource which exists solely to slander him or his business.
The real question you need to ask is this: If the guy is such a tool, why are you the idiot still working there? It's a variation of the 'He only beats me because he loves me so much, I can't leave him' routine, or the 'she only cheats on me because I don't appreciate her'....it's all irrationality and it's all based on denial.
The employee in this case is SO far in denial, he even went to the lengths of forging a receipt and fabricating a national story just to make his boss look bad. Larry David couldn't even write something that socially suicidal.

Here's the thing - Karma is a real bitch - so if you believe that what goes around, comes around, he should probably be out luck one day and have someone feel the same compassion toward him.
