95-Year-Old Left In Car For 2 Hours As Caregiver Gambled, Police Say

95 year old woman health care Seminole Creek FloridaA woman responsible for taking care of a 95-year-old with dementia was arrested Sunday after leaving her in a car for more than two hours to gamble at a South Florida casino, police say.

According to the South Florida Sun Sentinel, Maria Holly, 53, was arrested after a visitor to the Seminole Casino Coconut Creek noticed the 95-year-old woman sitting in a car and called police.

The elder woman, Belle Sapstein, who wasn't able to answer questions about herself because of her dementia, was uninjured, police say. She was taken to a local hospital for observation and was still listed as a patient there Monday afternoon, the newspaper says.

Surveillance video from the casino, located about 40 miles north of Miami, reportedly showed Holly driving into the parking lot at 4:49 p.m. on Sunday. An officer was dispatched at 7:07 p.m.

Though Sapstein appeared to suffer no distress from the incident, she was left alone without food, drink or a cellphone, WPTV in Palm Beach says, citing a report by a police officer responding to the call.

Holly, who says she is a licensed nurse, thought it was OK to leave the elderly woman in the car, according to the arrest report.

Broward County Circuit Judge Louis Schiff ordered Holly to be held on $6,000 bond and to have no contact with Sapstein, the TV station reports. Schiff also prohibited Holly from working as a caregiver until her criminal case is resolved.

She thought it was okay? More like she knew the woman would not have the capacity to rat on her....no kids, pets, or elderly charges for that [nurse] please.

The accused is not a licensed nurse of any kind in the state of Florida. She's an impostor; which in many jurisdictions carries a fine or various charges. You can verify nursing licenses via nursys.com.
Everyone who claims to be a nurse, isn't always a nurse. If you find a fake one, report them to the Board of Nursing.

I guess the nurse couldn't find a newborn or toddler to leave in the car so she went to the opposite end of the spectrum.

This kind of stuff happen's all the time, here in America. Even some community leader's and activist's here in Los Angeles is taking placeleaving 95 yr. old gramma alone 99% of the time , with bedroom window's boarded, and this old woman not having the proper care in regards to her grooming and sanitation being that she was left laying on the floor when she slipped and her hip fractured. She was alone for day's and it was a miracle that her live in boarder ( atty) in the back found her. This poor gramma was prohibited from any visitation's from concerned neighbor's or children. Strict order's from her grandson being a well known community activist. Such a charmer, that he has that ability to convince , lawyer's , police, nurses, & yes social worker's of his word being credible. Yes, this stuff is a tragedy .

That nurse should go to jail and have the CRAP beaten out of her by fellow inmates, or better yet have some of the correctional officers POKER in her KENO until BINGO, she gets it and realizes that while she was in the casino she was playing RUSSIAN ROULETTE with this woman's life which was the biggest GAMBLE she made in this whole affair.

This woman should not be a health care provider anymore, for sure.
For those asking, If you watch the video, it is reported the "nurse" has 2 warrants out for her arrest, not related to this incident. The warrants are for exploitation of the elderly and grand theft.

I agree w/ 'katie 2'...the gov't unit in charge of health providers should also be made to answer as to why this heartless woman was allowed to continue being a caregiver when she already has warrants....where is the law that protects senior citizens from law-offenders???
