Unemployment Aid Applications Near A 4-Year Low

unemployment claims down Labor DepartmentBy Christopher S. Rugaber

WASHINGTON (AP) -- The number of people seeking unemployment aid neared a four-year low last week, an encouraging sign that strong hiring could continue in the coming months.

The Labor Department said Thursday that weekly applications for unemployment benefits fell 15,000 to a seasonally adjusted 358,000. That's the second-lowest level since April 2008.

The four-week average, a less volatile measure, fell to 366,250, the lowest since late April 2008. When applications fall consistently below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

A consistent decline in applications has coincided with the best job growth since last spring.

Employers added a net gain of 243,000 jobs in January, far more than economists had projected. That was the biggest gain in nine months. The unemployment rate fell for the fifth straight month to 8.3 percent.

From November through January, the economy has added an average of 201,000 net jobs per month.

The increased hiring in part reflects faster economic growth. The economy expanded at an annual rate of 2.8 percent in the final three months of last year - a full percentage point higher than the previous quarter.

Most economists expect growth will slow a bit in the current quarter, because companies won't need to rebuild their stockpiles of goods as much as they did in the winter.

But some economists are increasingly optimistic that the economy will steadily expand this year, given last month's unexpectedly large job gains and other positive signs.

U.S. manufacturing activity grew in January at the fastest pace in seven months. Americans are buying more cars and trucks. And consumers stepped up borrowing in November and December by the most in a decade, which could indicate they are growing more confident in the economy.

Still, the job market has a long way to go before it fully recovers from the damage of the Great Recession. Nearly 13 million people remain unemployed, and 8.3 percent unemployment is painfully high.

One reason the unemployment rate has fallen for five straight months is that many people have stopped looking for work. The government only counts people as unemployed if they are actively searching for a job.

The figures come a week after the government reported that employers added 243,000 net jobs last month. That pushed the unemployment rate down to 8.3 percent, the lowest in nearly three years.

When applications fall consistently below 375,000, it usually signals that hiring is strong enough to lower the unemployment rate.

The applications are at a new low because people have run out of benefits, are still unemployed and can't apply again. I know Mr. Obama is doing what he can (given his constraints) but it is hell out here on the streets. AND.. if Congress doesn't approve another extension for emergency unemployment benefits, all the other services are going to be overloaded with those who cannot survive otherwise. Food stamps, medicaid, ADC ... and folks chosing to begin Social Security earlier which puts more strain on those funds as well. It isn't the White House "cooking" the numbers ... it is the state provided data and the fact that fewer applications DOES NOT MEAN the employment situation has improved. Husband out of work one year, wife on disability, husband about to lose unemployment benefits - called Wells Fargo to see if they would modify our interest rate on our mortgage (never have made a late payment in 15 years) and they said there was nothing they could do unless I defaulted. So - I have to ruin the one thing I still have, my credit, so I can keep from getting worse credit for foreclosure. How assinine is that - why not just do the load modification - idiots.

How can this be when companies are laying off employees and some are closing stores and some are going out of business completely? Someone in the Obama administration is cooking the numbers!

The recession is over and unemployment is at an all time low. All this time I thought I was under employed, broke and in debt. Whew, what a relief.

Come on Huffington. How about REPORTING the WHOLE TRUTH. You are not placing the real truth front and center. Many have given up looking. They dont need to with extended unemployment benefits which do nothing but ADD TO THE NATIONAL DEBT!!! Some will get a job for a short time, get themselves fired and go right back on unemployment. Step up and be FULLY HONEST>

When the hell are American gioing to realize that a nations wealth is what comes out of the ground and surrounding waters. Prosperity is what you do with that wealth. Look at Canada, Brazil, Australia, Indonesia, Russia, even parts of Africa., Suadi Arabia, Iraq, Iran. Their economies are doing better than the USA because of their natural resources. And yet the USA allows itself to be captive to a handfull of people who under the pretense of preserving the environment actually want to bring about the destruction of our economy and political stability. Tthe European countries which formerly lived off the riches of their colonial empires are a good example of what the USA will be like in a few years if we dont wake up.

What about all the people still out of work that are no longer in the count? You can't seriously expect us to believe these manipulated numbers? These numbers mean nothing and are useless unless everyone is in the count.
