Do: Wear a Bold Red Lipstick

While red lipstick might sound daring for daytime, it can still look professional if the rest of your makeup is subtle. "With a neutral eye, matte skin and a touch of blush, red lipstick can look phenomenal for day," says makeup artist Napoleon Perdis. Bobbi Brown makes several matte shades of red that work for the office.

Don't: Let Roots Show

Dark or gray roots are never fashionable at work, no matter what wild hairstyles appear on the runway. If you can't afford to get touch-ups as often as you'd like, try a retouching kit, which are often sold at professional salons. Your colorist can formulate the dye to ensure it matches your in-salon treatment.

Do: Splurge On a Professional Blow Dry

A professional blowout, which can cost as little at $25, will add a bit of polish to your appearance, says hair stylist Patrick Melville. "For a big interview, invest in a great blow dry. Looking simple and classic can help you land a job," he says.

Don't: Necessarily Cut Your Hair Shorter As You Grow Older

While wearing your hair in pigtails isn't appropriate for the office, keeping it fairly long into your 40s or 50s is OK, says Melville. However, hair often becomes more dry and brittle as you age, which means you might want to bring up the length a little bit to ensure it looks healthy. The stylist says the "long/short" haircut, which grazes the shoulder or the collar, is a popular choice. The length offers the ease of a short hairstyle with the aesthetic appeal of a longer one.

Do: Try a Touch of Blush

Blush is a good thing, especially when applied to the apples of your cheeks. "It just makes you look healthier," says Perdis. For a natural look, try NARS' Orgasm powder blush--the classic peachy-pink color favored by beauty editors--or Tarte cheek stain in Flush.
