Cut Down Your Job Search In 4 Easy Steps
We know the job search can be a long, tedious process. In fact, it can feel like a full time job in itself. But, do you ever think you're doing too much? That is, is the work you're putting in not giving you the same output?
It is possible that you may be overdoing your job search. Sure, the more you do the better, but it's more important to use these tactics effectively without chocking your job search. So, if you believe that you're a victim of an overworked job hunt, here are four ways to cut it down.
1. Stop mass applying
Think about it logically. What is the point of mass applying to menial job after menial job if you don't have a real interest in the positions? By mass applying you aren't making your job search better. You're overloading it and yourself. Statistically it may land you something, but the point here is that "something" doesn't cut it in the long run. Plus, more often than not, mass appliers aren't catering their applications to each job, which doesn't look that great on their end.
2. Narrow it down
Instead of mass applying, narrow your search down to a few companies, or a couple job choices, and really focus your energy on those options. You'll not only dedicate more time to these choices, you will probably enjoy the job you will eventually get.
3. Search by occupation
Did you know that many employers don't submit jobs by job title, but by occupation? It's not as crazy as it sounds. Employers do this to get the largest applicant pool, as well as to find candidates with transferable skills. Cut down your search time by looking for jobs by occupation, even if you don't think searching by an occupational category is for you. You may be surprised at your choices.
4. Apply properly
Many applicants clog up their job search by failing to follow directions properly. Sure, you may believe adding that extra writing sample or that additional testimonial will make you a more viable candidate, but employers put restrictions on the job description for a reason.
Further, if you're applying using an Applicant Tracking System (or ATS) and you don't follow directions, you may make it harder for your application to be noticed by the catered technology. So, if the application asks you to submit your resume a certain way, do so. Don't take shortcuts and don't overload your application. You're only going to hurt your chances.
