Policewoman Goes To Jail Because She Couldn't Be Bothered To Arrest A Suspect

Policewoman goes to jailPrison is an unfortunate place to spend a year, especially if you've dedicated your life to law enforcement. But that is the fate of Constable Michele Selby, who failed to detain a man who appeared to be breaking into a Chinese restaurant in Dunbartonshire, U.K., because she had other stuff to do.

At 5.30 a.m., Selby and her partner on-duty Mechelle Maley, found a man with a red-handled screwdriver, crowbar and wrench fiddling with the restaurant's door, The Daily Mail reports.

He claimed that he was fixing it. Selby wasn't convinced, and did a background check on the man, who had six previous convictions. Selby knew that he was trying to break-in, she told him, and if she didn't have another call to take he'd be on his way to jail. She just confiscated his tools instead.

That call wasn't actually a call. Selby's previous obligation was delivering letters to a police station.

Maley, 23, claimed that she didn't feel confident enough to challenge Selby, 38, but later reported the incident to her superiors.

On Thursday, Selby was convicted of trying to defeat the ends of justice.

"I made a mistake," she admitted to the court, "it wasn't intentional, it wasn't willful, it wasn't evil. I didn't start my shift and say, 'I'm going to defeat the ends of justice today.' "

When he passed the sentence, Sheriff Richard Clark told Selby: 'I recognize that the effect of this conviction is catastrophic for you."

Jail time certainly is no boon to a sheriff's career; Selby has since resigned from the force.

Firing her was the right thing to do. There are a few females in Law Enforcement that have passed all the tests, but cannot and do not apply what they have learned. Many just want the uniform and pay. Oh! yes there are some males officers that perform the same as she.. Many women police officer know their physical limitations and play it safe. I don't think she deserve a year in jail, but 48 hours would have been eniough and the lost of her job. I've worked with two female officers and did feel secure working with them, and requested not to work again with them as a partner. They enventually quit.

well it is fair as she had a job to do and if she felt she was incapable of doing her job she should have called back up then resigned. It is about time we hold others such ass law enforcement accountable as delivering mail could have waited. What if there was someone there that had interrupted the burglary and as a result was killed she could also be facing accessory to murder charges. Duh.

It seems the sentence is overly punitive; this Sheriff's Officer should have been specially reprimanded, never sent to jail. Disgraceful.

It's a normal thing here in m'sia to ignore crimes in progress and continue down the street for a cuppa....or doughnut...Heck, we can even say"it's not my job" to a complainant n send the grumbling home.....and continue texting or chatting over the phone.....so, i dont see whats the big deal here...she did confiscate the tools n prevented a break in....she would have been commended if she was in m'sia...for actually doing something.....hahahahahhaha

Wow, a year in prison! Talk about over kill. Come on! What about when cops give warning tickets to speeding drivers?

It was certainly a mistake, but in jail for a year! That's ridiculous, especially if she had an otherwise good record. Perhaps she should have lost her job, but a year in prison? Whew! That's a waste of prison space in my opinion.

good...some ppl are not cut out for police.....although many are STILL on forces all across the country. That is also a career that has failed on many levels.

males will always fire women for bullshit .. the officer took the tools, he did not commit another crime .. had a male done the same thing he would still be on the force .. that partner is a dumb bunny, she has bad karma now .. she must always look over her shoulder, no one likes a petty, young & self-important co- worker .. what a jerk maley turned out to be.

Women get off much EASIER at work as they are not always held to the same level of accountability. That is because it is HARDER to let women go due to threats of lawsuits.

We don't know if he commited another crime or not. Let it had been your home and the dumb twit did the same thing, would you be here justifying her failure? Doubtful. She should have been fired. Maybe not jail time but definately fired with it on her record.

why can't we get that kind of Justice here in the states? police abuse their power and authority every day and they get paid vacations and cushy desk jobs until everything blows over.
