Southern California City Bans Coffeehouse Nudity, Gambling

Coffeehouse Nudity GARDEN GROVE, Calif. -- Glimpses of bare breasts and more will no longer be offered with $5 cups of coffee at lingerie cafes in a Southern California suburb.

More than three dozen of the coffeehouses are operating in the Orange County city of Garden Grove, and some waitresses have been slipping out of teddies to serve customers in the nude. Additionally, arcade machines have been rigged to be gambling machines.

The Orange County Register reports Wednesday that the City Council has voted 4-0 to ban nudity, gambling and smoking in the sexy cafes.

Police Chief Kevin Raney told the council that his officers have raided 20 coffeehouses and confiscated 200 gambling machines. The chief says nude waitresses were also encountered, and the lingerie cafes have attracted gangs.

I don't see any difference between topless bars and lingerie cafes. After that, it's just a matter of time before the cafes feature males and start catering to women.

The stereotype, of course, is that men, being visual, are immediately drawn to centerfolds, whereas women, being emotional, are drawn to Harlequin Romance novels. However, Lorna D. Keach writes on AlterNet (a liberal headlines e-mail newsletter):

"It’s no secret that many women enjoy porn just a much as men. Researchers have shown that women experience similar genital stimulation as men while watching porn..And according to Theresa Flynt, vice president of marketing for Hustler video, female consumers make up 56% of video sales."

Adult pornography has a right to exist under the First Amendment. Whether or not it has any redeeming social value is beside the point.

I think an identical argument holds concerning lingerie cafes.

I don't make it a habit of stereo-typing, but I can almost bet that these coffee houses were owned by Hmong's. Coffee houses in Asia are very popular and here in the U.S. where you have a large concentration of Hmong, you will find their culture creating the same scenerio. If the shoe fits...wear it!
