Making a smooth transition from the military to a civilian job requires some introspection and planning. AOL Jobs recently spoke to Rachelle Chapman, senior manager for Specialty Recruitment Programs & Military Liaison for Adecco, who recommended these job search strategies for transitioning military.
1. Start your job search campaign early.
Many transitioning military have a year or more to plan for their move back into civilian life and servicemen are encouraged to let people know about their plans well in advance of the actual departure date.
2. Tap into resources for transitioning military.
The government's TAP (Transition Assistance Program) teaches transitioning military how to write a resume and interview effectively. Adecco's Military Spouse Connection Program helps transitioning spouses prepare for the job market when they need to relocate following their spouse's discharge.
3. Source companies that want to hire veterans.
VetJobs is a job board available to all members of the "United States Military Family" including officer and enlisted, active duty, transitioning military, reservists, veterans, retirees, of the Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Merchant Marine, National Guard, Navy, NOAA and public health service along with trailing spouses, eligible former spouses, widows, widowers and dependents and DOD civilians.
4. Showcase special military skills that differentiate your candidacy. Transitioning military with government security clearances are often sought out for positions in engineering, technology, cyber security, and government contract work.
