top resume strategies Selena Dehne, JIST Publishing

For more than 20 years, 'Resume Magic' author Susan Britton Whitcomb has helped thousands of people better manage their job hunts and careers. The job market has changed substantially during this time, but what hasn't changed are many of the obstacles job seekers struggle to overcome in their quest for employment.

For example, one of the most common weaknesses people have in the job search is a lack of understanding about how to write a resume that succinctly tells employers what they can do that other candidates can't.

Not only does Whitcomb help job seekers overcome this problem, she also lends guidance to other career professionals like herself who have their own job-seeking clients. Below are a few of the résumé strategies she shares that have been especially effective in helping job seekers capture employers' attention and secure interviews.

1. Write like an advertising copywriter, not an autobiographer.

2. Connect with the employer by targeting positions that capture elements of your Master F.I.T.™ (Function and Fulfillment; Industry/Interests and Identity; and Things That Matter and Type).

These positions should be consistent with your career brand. Who you are should align closely with what you want to do.

3. Zero in on what the employer needs by reviewing position postings, networking (in person or online) or conducting research or informational interviews.

These needs can be categorized as TOP issues: Trends, Opportunities and Problems/Projects.

4. Substantiate your ability to do the job and meet the needs by including numbers-driven results.

Make an economic case for hiring you.

5. Omit extraneous information.

Employers looking for a sales professional will rarely care that your degree is in Home Economics (list the bachelor's degree but not the subject area).

6. Create multiple résumés for multiple targets. One resume will suffice for the targets of sales and business development; two resumes are appropriate for unrelated targets, such as sales and procurement.

7. Position critical information (such as keywords and accomplishments) in the first third of the page.

Briefly summarize or omit dated information.

8. Prioritize the sentences that comprise your job description.

Place the most relevant information first and less relevant information last.

9. Spin information to be as transferable as possible.

If an employer needs someone who can make electronic widgets and your background involves only mechanical widgets, refer to your experience with "widgets" rather than "mechanical widgets."

10. Use your resume wisely -- it plays a supporting role and is not the star of your job search show.

Too often, job seekers hide behind resumes, thinking that if they just mail or e-mail enough resumes, a job will materialize. Yes, it's appropriate to e-mail résumés or post them on your target companies' websites. But you must combine these activities with extreme networking. Humans make hiring decisions -- get face-to-face with employers and show them you can meet their needs. This will give you an edge over your competition.

Let me first say that this country is a joke. It talks about the American dream but there is no dream unless someone in authority knows you, or you are the relative or is sleeping with someone in power.

The unemployment rate is high because all the employers including the government are outsourcing the jobs for cheap labor. If you do get a job here, your are working minimum wage which of course cannot feed a family of two. I am fortunate to still have a job, and I work with local government, but of course I have no benefits.

I notice that John McCain was running for President when he was 70+ years old, do you really think I could go into an office at 70 to apply for a job and get it? they would look at me as if I am crazy. Every member of the Senate, Congress and the White House should be asked to retire, and set the standard that every person when they reach 65 regardless of where they work should retire from the work place.

America is a land of opportunities, but it is also a country build on dishonesty. As a result we only have the rich and the poor, and the rich is still taking away even the little that the poor has. They talk about they do not discriminate but they do. To get a job today is not who you know, is who know you. Education do not even matter because you find individuals with less education than you supervising you.

Our only hope in this world is to sit patiently and wait until King Jesus comes and he will make things right. What a day of rejoicing that will be especially for us poor people who spend all our lives depending on God for our daily bread. IN GOD WE TRUST.

Is it possible to be TOO polished in the resume? I've known a lot of people whose responsibility was to interview candidates for their departments. It isn't always true that the interview is performed by someone in HR.

The problem I've observed is that some of these non-professional interviewers either consciously or unconsciously perceive polished candidates as threats to their positions - after all, why should I recommend hiring someone who may replace me one day?

Any strategies or comments about this not uncommon occurrence?

Revolt Now

OK so since the government is downplaying the rate of unemployment in our country and not doing anything to "create new jobs", why not show the government that we're tired of it? If Egypt could get it together, we sure can! We have to make our voices heard! I'm tired of working for peanuts, running the rat race, putting up with workplace bullying from upper management and being afraid to speak up for myself for fear of losing my job. Oh, but the unemployment rate is "the lowest its been in 9 months"...bull! My husband's been unemployed since December 2010 and NJ Dept of Labor has stopped his benefits TWICE now, because he's "failed to make an appointment with...". This man is at the unemployment office AT LEAST ONCE A WEEK! You would think one of those mindless, ignorant idiots working there would look at his file and say something to him BEFORE stopping the benefits, but no, there's no notice sent out or even phone call letting him know that his benefits will cease if he does not make an appointment with so-and-so by a certain date; no, you don't know why your benefits have stopped coming until it happens. When he's mentioned it, he's not even offered an apology! Whatever, I'm sick of my taxes going to support the fat cats in government, their salaries, pensions and lifetime health benefits, for my measly paycheck. REVOLT NOW! Facebook?

NOW THAT EGYPT HAS BECOME SOMEWHAT DEMOCRATIC, WE CAN START OUTSOURING JOBS THERE TOO. SOON EVERY GOD FUCKING JOB WILL BE GONE THANKS TO OUR ROTTEN, SHIT EATING GOVERNMENT WHICH SAYS 'ALL THAT MATTERS IS HELPING THE FILTHY RICH GET RICHER, IF THAT MEANS OFFSHORING EVERY GODDAMN AMERICAN JOB THAN SO BE IT"

Don't you people get it. BIG BUSINESS and the Corporations NOW COMPLETELY control our government with bribes, kickbacks and campaign donations. Stopping the offfshoring means stopping the bribe money the politicians live for. Increasing tarrifs means decreasing the bribe money the politicians live for. There is No way Goddamn Fucking Hell the politicians are going to give up their bribe money or campaign money as they call it.

The ONLY answer is a total revolt. Start taking down the most corrupt politicians. If the rest don't get the picture, take out the next level of corrupt politicians. I would estimate around 99% of our government leaders are corrupt. There is just different levels of corruption. Probably they will have to be taken down before we can bring back prosperity to this once great nation.

OVER HALF OF US CONGRESS ARE NOW MULTI-MILLIONAIRES.
MAINLY BY TRADING OUR JOBS FOR FAVORS, BRIBES AND PAYOFFS

If you watch the news you probably know most of the members of congress like John Boehner are now not just millionaires but MULTI-MILLIONAIRES. We’re talking like 40, 50, 100, 200 or more million in savings and assets. At the same time tens of millions of Americans were and are losing their jobs, savings, homes and have slid into poverty.

This just proves that our country is being run the Goddamn filthy rich, who’s friends and family are also all filthy stinking rich. So of course all they care about is the filthy rich. That’s why every move our government leaders make, every breath they take, is to benefit the Goddamn filthy rich NOT the people that elected them and pay their salaries, the tax payer.

Most of theses MULTI-MILLIONAIRES started off wealthy but after all the bribes, kickbacks and payoffs they received for selling out the people they work for (us), they were able to amass millions. While they did nothing but trade favors for bribes, millions of Americans lost their jobs, homes, savings and ended up on the streets.

This also proves only the rich have any chance of getting elected to these high level government positions. Some people say “well you elected them or we elected them” Well what choices do we have. They all lie, they’re all rich, all their friends and family are rich. Let’s see someone non-rich get elected. There’s no way . The filthy Goddamn rich would never let that happen. If you don’t play their help the rich and piss on the working class and poor than get lost. If someone that’s cares about the people tries to run the rich will crush them and have many times.

The fact is the only way to save this country is a massive revolt. Try and hang every member of all three branches of our government. Replace them with non-rich American’s that will be fair to everyone not just the filthy Goddamn rich like it is now.

And what’s really sickening is while they are all becoming millionaires and multi-millionaires, tens of millions of Americans are becoming homeless and dying in the streets. Anyone that thinks that's cool or fair has their Goddamn head up their Goddamn ass and in nothing but a hunk of fucking human waist.

Goddamnit !!! I've been out of work almost 3 1/2 years and applied at over 2,800 companies. I apply and send out ten to twenty resumes and fill out several applications EVERY GODDAMN DAY. I have a college degree and three trade school certificates. It's always either I'm under qualified or over qualified (over aged). The problem is I'm in my 40's. and because of the deliberate destruction of the economy (by the fed and Wall street) along with massive unemployment, employers are only looking to hire people 29 or younger. I’ve applied for full time, part time, contract, etc every Goddamn job I can qualify for. I’m not picky, I’ll take anything. I’m registered with thousands of agencies. Occasionally I get a call from an agency but when they submit my resume they say the company wants someone younger. I’ve heard this dozens of times over the last few years.

I'm a hard and reliable worker but I'm been laid off several times over the last 6 years due to outsourcing and because in California they want Hispanics not English speaking whites. God fucking damn our piece of Goddamn shit government for letting the economy crumble while they laugh and live in luxury with their 6 digit salaries and 6 digit pensions. God Fucking damn this Goddamn fucked up country.

If this is a nation under God, than God must have taken a giant dump

NO MORE GOD BLESS AMERICA LAND OF THE FREE

the new slogan

GODDAMN AMERICA LAND OF THE GREED

EXPERTS PREDICT 25% TO 35% U.S.UNEMPLOYMENT BY 2014

Although it appears new unemployment claims have slowed, economists like Gerald Clemente are predicting possible 35% unemployment by 2014. This is Americans unemployed because they can’t find work, NOT the bogus unemployment rate that the government uses. They are only count people actually COLLECTING unemployment. Not the people who did not qualify, those who’s ran out, or younger American who have recently entered the job market.

Every year millions more people enter the job market, Sure some retire but for every 2 people retiring, 3 more enter the job market. So of course you’re going to need more jobs.
not less. But the biggest problem is a massive campaign by BIG BUSINESS to offshore every Goddamn American job. If you can’t replace the employees with automation than they must be outsourced is their only goal. Companies that can’t afford to outsource will instead use illegal aliens.

And thanks to our worthless, greedy, corrupt beyond belief piece of shit government, the corporations have succeeded in offshoring more than 40 million American jobs over the last 25 years. Thanks to all the bribes and favors our politicians received, deals by dick head Bill Clinton and AssWipes George Bush JR and Senior, the outsourcing overseas and to Mexico has exploded.

Even if you stop the outsourcing, we would still have a shortage of jobs because the population is growing fast however when you combine this with massive offshoring of jobs you eventually end up with massive unemployment.

It’s simple mathematics.
Population expanding + massive offshoring = massive unemployment

Until we revolt and take back the government from Big Business and punish all the politicians that sold us out ( most of them) things will only get worse. People must understand that the Filthy Rich which includes Big Business and the Banks now completely control the government and they have found a way to suck up all the money
leaving the country ready to collapse from major debt. And the economy will collapse unless we revolt and save it.

If you love your country and your children you’ll start a revolt now. If not than do nothing and let the country crumble. And yes it WILL be your fault.

WHY STEROIDS ARE LIKE OUTSOURCING,
EVEN MARK MCGUIRE WOULD AGREE

Just like steroids in professional sports the biggest excuse most companies give for outsourcing is that is that everyone else is doing it so the only way for us to stay competitive is to outsource too. This is all because our greedy, rotten, worthless government helped to ship away all our jobs to other countries mainly China, India and Mexico. They want to control our personal lives but when it comes to big business, well they can do what ever they want. It should be the other way around.

Sure a lot of items are cheaper to buy but what about the quality. There is none. That’s why everything you buy these days breaks in a year or two and you have to buy another and another and another. If it was made here in the US it may cost twice as much but last ten times longer. (excluding autos)

Many American companies are tricking us into thinking we are buying made in America. Awhile back I bought a faucet made by American Standard thinking I was buying made in America. Later after I installed it, I looked at with a magnifying glass and found made in Mexico written in teeny tiny print on the back. JC Penny has a new line of clothes called American Culture. It’s all made overseas.

Indeed our government has become so corrupt it’s beyond belief. Our government used to care about the people but now it doesn’t give a rats ass. All our government cares about is helping the rich to get richer. The ONLY way the rich can become richer is by sucking more and more money out of the working class, mainly the middle class..
The cost of living has skyrocketed, utilities, food, rent. taxes, fees, and yes now again gas, everything up and up. Everything except pay that is. Unless you work for the government. They keep giving themselves huge cost of living increases while the rest of us are getting pay cuts or getting laid off to make room for lower paid workers.

All the decent jobs have been outsourced and there is nothing left but crappy, dead end, bottom of the barrow jobs that are low paying with NO benefits. Most companies go through agencies these days so they won’t have to pay you shit or give you benefits or job security. Our government thinks that’s cool. Instead of stopping the outsourcing our government encourages it. Even the government is outsourcing now. If your job doesn’t get outsourced than you will probably lose it to an illegal alien who will work for much less.

Our worthless government just kicked back and laughed as all the decent jobs were outsourced and even helped them by giving tax breaks to companies that offshored.. When it comes to major problems like jobs, healthcare, social security, etc, our government could care less. These things don’t affect the rich so our government doesn’t give a damn. Terrorism indeed affects the rich so our government is greatly concerned and has no limit on military and anti-terrorism spending. We will all pay for the war eventually. Of course our government won’t spend a dime on creating jobs, healthcare or helping the working people of this country, Instead of coming up with solutions , all they want to do raise taxes Matter of fact, all the government leaders do all day are three things.:

1) Search for bribes and kickbacks
2) Try to come up with new ways to tax us
3) Vote themselves big pay raises

The people that are running our government are nothing but lazy, selfish, evil, corrupt scumbags. All they give us is BS BS and more BS.

If you want to stand out and you're a female, show some cleavage and wear a short skirt. Most of these employers are male perverted scumbags. If you're a male and the interviewer is feamale, try stuffing some socks in the shorts. It also works if the interviewer is male and gay.

Of course these asshole employers are mainly looking for young people they can treat like shit, pay little to nothing and totally abuse.
