Companies to Watch: Apple

Industry: Computers/Personal Electronics

Headquarters: Cupertino, Calif.

CEO: Steve Jobs

Apple Computers was originally founded in 1976 by Steve Wozniak, Ronald Wayne and current CEO Steve Jobs. Starting out as a force in the emerging personal computer field through the '80s, the company seemed to wane in terms of revenue and profitability through much of the '90s.

Looking back at all their recent success, it's amazing to consider Michael Dell's now famous statement, which he made in 1997, that if he was running Apple he would "shut it down and give the money back to the shareholders."

Since then the world has seen the emergence of wildly successful products such as the iPod, iPhone and iPad. In response to their growing lineup of products, the company changed its name from Apple Computers, Inc. to Apple, Inc. in 2007.

The company is now a force in the field of mobile communications as well as computing and personal electronics. Part of its recent growth must be attributed to the incredibly popular Apple Store retail locations.

Apple is currently looking for sales associates, managers and geniuses (for their in-store, Genius Bar technical support services). In their corporate offices, Apple has positions open for business development executives, software engineers, account executives and inventory specialists.

What It's Like to Work at Apple

At Apple, it's never, "How long did you work for the company?" but rather, "How many times did you work at Apple?" The Apple attitude seems to infect everyone who works closely with the technology -- and, even after leaving the company, we all say that we still "bleed six colors," in reference to the original six-color Apple logo.

I Interviewed at Apple

I landed a job interview at Apple simply by submitting a cover letter and resume through the Apple website. I was invited to a "hiring event," where I was given a glimpse into the company culture and hiring process.
