Top 10 Workplace Trends for 2011

workplace trends 2011 The recession may be on its way out, but for many the progress in 2010 was frustratingly slow, with improvements more of a rumor than a reality.

Nothing ever stays the same, however, and although there's no magic ball that can issue guarantees for the future in looking forward to 2011 several workplace trends can be confidently predicted, according to an article on CIO. Many of these trends indicate a continued economic upswing.

1. Telecommuting on the rise

Brick-and-mortar job opportunities remained flat over 2010 but the internet job marketplace, Elance, has seen continued growth in online and telecommuting opportunities with no sign that things will slow down. Technology and marketing skills are in particularly high demand.

2. Digital portfolios replacing traditional resumes

Old-fashioned paper resumes are falling out of favor, not only because the business world is increasingly moving into the online realm, but also because printed paper versions get out-dated so quickly and can't provide nearly as much information as the combination of an online portfolio and a well-developed social network.

3. Salary increases

A survey done by HR consultancy Towers Watson found that on average U.S. companies expect salary budgets to go up by 2.9% in 2011, which means that if you've been waiting out a salary freeze it's likely to finally be lifted. In fact only 5% of companies surveyed reported that they plan to continue salary freezes this year.

4. Mobility over Desktop

Mobile developers will be sitting pretty as the demand for access to internet content, on-the-go via mobile devices like smartphones and tablet computers grows, even to the point of surpassing desktop usage. Expect online business to start moving to a 'mobile first, desktop second' approach.

5. "Soft skills" prioritized by employers

According to NACE's Job Outlook 2011 Survey "soft skills" top the list of what employers are looking for in new hires, with verbal communication skills in particular coming out on top. The survey focused on skills desired in new college graduates but common sense says it's a likely priority in all new employees, as is a strong work ethic, teamwork skills, analytical ability, and initiative.

6. Increased hiring of new college grads

NACE's survey also found that businesses plan to hire 13.5% more new college grads in 2011 than they did from the class 2010, which also reflects an expected increase in job openings. Competition will continue to be fierce, however.

7. High-tech communication tools and online hiring

As communication technologies continue to improve, and telecommuting becomes more common, tools which facilitate digital communication will continue to increase in demand. Such tools include shared digital workrooms, real-time collaboration software, telepresence suites, and online employment platforms for hiring employees.

8. HTML5 vs. Flash, Programmers wanted

There's a war being fought between these two technologies and although there will eventually be a winner (HTML5 quite likely), programmers for both are currently in high demand as rich media content and casual online gaming continue to make large popularity gains.

9. Businesses get social

Businesses will continue to move into the social media realm, looking to leverage online "word of mouth" to their advantage through sites like Groupon, Facebook, and Twitter. In general businesses are tending to favor employees and new hires with social media experience over those without.

10. Traditional marketing on the way out

With the growth of mobile internet access, social media marketing, and other web-based promotional tools, traditional advertising techniques like direct mail and telemarketing are falling by the wayside and seem to be heading towards obsolescence.

I am an IT recruiter and I hear what The G**D** JC guy is saying and partially agree with him about the corporate and high level corruption rooting from Greed and Power... But if you are that negative in real life, say an interview for example or a meeting with a recruiter- NO BODY will
A) Work with your negative nancy attidude and or REPRESENT you to a client regardless of age---I have contractors 60+ and they are new hires.
B) Hire you.

But if your just blowing off steam, and really aren't that negative about everything in your life. Then I would recommend applying to jobs that require the exact experience that you have- and clearly demonstrated on your resume. or START OVER and enroll in an IT TECH SCHOOL, get some specific skills and then be marketable.

As for the original reason I responded to this post DENTAL HYGIENE Question.
I know of a ton of recent grads that try to get into a good dental school and can't. That's not because there are tons of jobs out there in the DENTAL FIELD. If your talking about getting your Doctorate, then yes, you should be fine if you specialize in something, say oral sergeon or Start your own practice. If you mean technician level like the one that does the work in the dentist office before the Dr. inspects it, that job is very hard to get in this market. But if you've already started school aiming this way it would be easier to crossover to healthcare if you want. Which will, Until the end of time, have a good level of demand for any level of position.

SOLUTION - GET RID OF THE FOREIGNERS!!!!

(If that pisses you off then you probably are one that I'm talking about)

Melting pot? Melt this! The minute we turned our back on doing anything about the illegals this country started falling apart!
Politicians just want votes and don't give a crap about a US citizens well being. Our country is spending wayyyyy too much money on catering to illegal aliens and giving hand outs. Learn to speak English!!!!!

On top of all that we have everything made in another country by foreigners and shipped to the US. What do WE outsource? - Money to countries that could give a crap if we ever ran into trouble.

Good job on the Obama election too! The only "CHANGE" is the huge amount of money spent on his useless vacations of tax payers dollar!

It's not a party thing - it's the dropping intelligence and pride of the American people. So sad.

I'm afraid it's too late - it will never be the same - the downward spiral has begun.

and sorry - articles like this just create false hope - can't you tell by all the responses.

There is a trick that i do to get a job,and it always works. My resume stands out way above all the rest of them.I got 3 offers for only 3 jobs i applied for.So i got to pick one of three.I print with a pen by hand and on only one sheet of paper with the least amount of information.Than i send it not to human resorces.I send it directly to the job building boss only. Most companies are seeking a person with a short resume, and i print very well.It stunnes the boss that i sent it directly to.And it stands out over all of the rest of yours for typing a resume.I than get a call only from the job boss concerning my resume and not human resorces. They through most of them in the trash.800 Typed resumes is not the way to go.Try my methed and see what happens.

JUST LIKE IN 1776 WE NEED TO REVOLT

AGAINST A TOTALLY CORRUPT GOVERNMENT

Everyone keeps complaining about the deplorable economic situation but nothing is being done about it. Our rotten careless government doesn’t give a rats ass. They know their enormous pay and million dollar pensions are guaranteed. Instead of controlling inflation, They kick back and do nothing as prices skyrocket ( Food, Utilities, Healthcare, Taxes, Etc) All they do is laugh and vote themselves BIG pay raises instead of dealing with the problem.

We need to band together and revolt against this evil corrupt government who traded our jobs for favors like campaign contributions (bribes and kickbacks) from all the million / billion dollar companies and corporations. Some people think just because they haven’t lost their job to outsourcing (yet) that it doesn’t affect them. They are so wrong. Not only does the dollar become devalued but what happens when a friend or family member loses their job to outsourcing and can’t support their family. Soon the only way people will able to survive is to steal once the rest of the jobs are gone.

Face the facts, the main reason we have gone into a depression is because so many people are losing there jobs due to the outsourcing. Even people who haven’t lost there jobs yet see the jobs disappearing at a alarming rate and a worthless, lazy, corrupt, evil government who instead of stopping it instead encourages it. The piece of shit government just kicked back a laughed as ALL the large businesses and corporations shipped most of our jobs overseas so they can make a bigger profit. Not only did our government not do their job and stop it, our evil corrupt government gave tax breaks to these multi-million dollar companies .To top it off, a lot of cities are outsourcing government jobs to save money instead of giving them to American workers who need them. This is Fucking insane!

Over seventy-five percent of our Industries have now been lost to foreign countries. Over twenty percent of our domestic jobs are now taken by Illegal Aliens. Almost all credit, financial, and health records of Americans have crossed over at least once to other countries via off-shoring. You don’t find out about it until your identity is stolen. The government says too bad it’s your problem. The government says” So your job gets outsourced or given to an illegal alien, your identity gets stolen and your credit and life is destroyed, a small price to pay to help the filthy rich”.

There’s is ONLY one way to stop the recession. Reverse the outsourcing and bring the jobs back. All the government has to do is increase taxes on companies that outsource and lower or eliminate taxes on companies that don’t. At the same time sharply increase tariffs on imported good especially goods from China and Japan. Level the playing field. Double, triple, or even quad triple the taxes on the companies that outsource. Tax them to a level that forces them to return the jobs to this country. It’s simple as that.

Why doesn’t the government do this. It’s because outsourcing helps the filthy rich get richer and that’s all our government cares about. The government says” we are all rich, our friends and family are all rich, all we care about is the rich. The rest of the country can die in the streets for all we care.” Our government wants a recession so that they can turn us into helpless slaves.

Damn it, almost all the decent jobs have been outsourced thanks to the lazy, corrupt evil, rotten government we have. The mortgage crisis, energy crisis and healthcare crisis would not have happened if the government didn’t have their heads up their asses. They let these businesses do want ever they want no matter how corrupt, dishonest and harmful it is to the nation. They don’t want to interfere with these multi-million dollar companies and corporations yet they want to control what we do in our personal lives. It’s OK to be hungry, sick, suffering and even homeless because there’s no more jobs available (mainly due to outsourcing and illegal immigration) but if you smoke pot, the government will send the cops over to bash your head and throw you in jail. How fucked is that….

People, unless we stop supporting this careless, reckless, rotten to the core government we are all going to be up shit creek without a paddle with our hands tied behind our backs and the government pushing us under. It will be even worse for our children who will forced to live a life of vi

BETTER START TEACHING YOUR KIDS CHINESE

China now has most of our jobs and owns a mortgage on the US in the Trillions, By the time your kids grow up, China will have foreclosed on America and merged with us to create the new country of ChinAmerica, Unless your kids speak Chinese they will not be employable. You can thank our evil greedy corrupt government for selling us out

ChinAmerica, get used to it

Many of the banks are looking to hire foreclosure specialists. The foreclosure of America has just begun. If you can't beat them join them as the banks plan to foreclose on almost everyone of everything they own. The filthy rich own almsot everthing but that's not good enough. They want it all and our government will be glad to help them suceed.
