Will Congress Extend Unemployment?

extend-unemploymentThere was an outcry over the fact that Congress once again held up passing a vote to extend unemployment benefits for an estimated 2 million jobless Americans.

According to new unemployment statistics that came out last Friday, there is an increase in the unemployment rate (to 9.5%) with 125,000 jobs lost. A bill to extend unemployment benefits to unemployed workers has stood stalled in Congress for a month as the GOP has so far blocked any attempts to extend unemployment benefits, even as unemployment rates still rise and there is no current major increase in hiring. The Republican move, stemming from a stance to stop government spending, has effectively cut off unemployment benefits for millions of unemployed workers who need those small stipends to cover their living expenses while looking for work.

After a refusal on the Democrat's side to move previously earmarked stimulus funds over to cover the unemployment extension, the bill was once again stalled last week - right before Congress took their vacation for the July Fourth holiday.

On top of the question of where the money to extend unemployment will come from, there's also a notion being thrown around that unemployed workers collecting unemployment are spending less time looking for a job, and instead treating their unemployment period as an extended vacation. "There is an economic argument that the longer you extend unemployment benefits, the longer people are unemployed. And after a while it adds to the problem rather than solves the problem," said Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga. And Senator Jon Kyl created a frenzy over his Senate floor speech last week stating that extending unemployment "doesn't create new jobs. In fact, if anything, continuing to pay people unemployment compensation is a disincentive for them to seek new work." However, with the majority of unemployed Americans receiving only $293 per week, that seems laughable.

The bill to extend unemployment could not come at a more important time, as Maurice Emsellem, a National Employment Law policy co-director told CNN last week, "There's only one job available for every five unemployed workers." Even economist Paul Krugman stated that we may be headed straight for a third depression, the fault of which he believes will be shouldered on a government unwilling to take action. "And this third depression will be primarily a failure of policy. Around the world...governments are obsessing about inflation when the real threat is deflation, preaching the need for belt-tightening when the real problem is inadequate spending."

Congress will reassemble next week to make a final decision on whether or not to extend unemployment benefits from the standard 26 weeks to 99 weeks for the millions of workers desperate to find jobs.

Well this to all of you...stop complaining and go yo the polls. While you are unemployed do your homework on the candidates and take the current congress(persons) and Senators out of office. When they all lose their jobs the incoming class will realize that we are not playing around anymore. Do the job you were sent there to do or go home.

Good luck

Blind Republican hate! When we ramped up for a false war in Iraq which we remain in.. look how much we've spent so far on that effort.. 750 billion and climbing.. yet in the first American Recovery Act our govt allocated roughly 50B to expand unemployment insurance programs.. yet Republicans gladly pay military gladiators and contractors many hundreds of billions to police and kill Iraqi's on fucking well known conjecture yet they have no faith in their own working class population, or as I see it are taking sadistic position in treating this class, which I am regretfully one of.

p hertz,
you forget that there is a democratic in office. why has he not pulled them? most of the house is democratic why have they not been brought home? one of these days you will realize ALL politicians are in for themselves. Does not matter what side you are on. Also as far as unemployment is concerned, I am one of the ones that got cut off. I am for NEITHER side. They both are a joke! What no one mentions is democrats passed a bill a while back stating noone could add to the deficit. According to the bill you have to cut one program to pay another. Now the DUMBASSES wonder why the bill fails to pass. ALSO they add in other things to unemployment bill. It has becoming a spending bill more than anything. Gulf cleanup was going to be put on US TAXPAYERS. THIS WAS IN THEIR BILL!!!!! So maybe if they put out a bill for unemployment and use billions in stimulus money it will pass. They are holding on to stimulus money so that they can have it at election time. If they release it then, It seems like the economy got much better and everyone will vote for them. Dirty BASTARDS!

A frustrating story.

I just wanted to say that recently my unemployment ran out. However, I went to check my unemployment account and low and behold there was $300 extra money in my account when I only expected to have $26 dollars. I guickly called the UIA and asked about the money in my account. I told them that I was informed that my unemployment had run out. They said "looks like we owe you money" and I said "are you sure and they said "yes, we check these things out thoroughly." I said I want to make sure before I spend it on my bills! With lots of hestiation I paid some of my bills! Low and behold, I received in the mail the following day two bills stating that I owe them money...............how is that for frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! No one can explain what the credit is for but they sure as HELL want their money THEY SAY I owe them!!!!!!!!!!! Go figure!!

Hi, I have a suggestion, and I want you to know that I don't pretend to know anything about anything.
If I were you, I would double check your figures and write down as much of that conversation and dates and times and names as you can.
Call your local Represenitives( Dems or Reps) and your local
newspapers. Tell them that you did all you could to make sure that it was money still left in your account and believed it to be true. Then thankfully you used it for food and etc. and that if you owe it to them that you understand mistakes happen and you would like to make payment arrangements. I'm sure that right now your Representitive would be happy to look the the hero in helping you and the paper will have a happy hopeful story to tell, if not then that Representitive would really have to be thinking of political suicide.
If there is anything at all I can do to help you find people to talk to, please let me know. Motherbug2001@aol.com, I mean that. Good Luck, and let us all know how it turns out.

Motherbug,

Thank you so much for responding to my frustrating email. What a great person you are:) It's a terrible position to be in and it's good to know others are concerned about you:)

I have good news:) I went to the UIA office myself. Not sure if that was a good idea because I could see first hand the desperate situations others are also in.........at home I could somewhat shield myself, if that makes sense to anyone. Anyway I took a number 350 to be exact! Thank God it was on 330 when I arrived. I had to wait but not too long. When I was finally called, the person helping me was really nice and willing to help me however in her eyes nothing could be done. I couldn't help myself and I started to cry. Everything at that moment was so overwhelming it just came out. She told me that she would be back because she needed to talk with someone who might be able to help. I totally wasn't listening I was to upset. She came back and brought someone with her. That person figured everything out...........and told me that i don't OWE anything. It was UIA's mistake, specifically, one of her workers that made the mistake. She said she would address the mistake with that person! I was totally shocked.....I went in owing money and making myself accept the fact TO........you don't OWE us anything! I was overjoyed! I was so happy that even when they told me that my extensions had run out and I wouldn't be getting any further money I was still happy! What's wrong with me! Anyway, that's the scoop. I received paperwork in the mail today that stating that I don't OWE any money! Yippee!!!!

I have been unemployed for now almost 2 years. Within that time I have been searching for jobs and even used that time to return to school. I just finished school moved to a cheaper state, where maintain my bills until I find a jod in the medical field and get off unemployment. Not even a week into moving I realized I never received my benefits and found out about congress and there issue. I have 2 children and my husband also lost his job now less than a year. He have been fighting with unemployment but gave up after all this time. He is currrently seeking employment as I am. I just need them to sign that bill so I can continue to maintain my family fir atleast another two months. Trust me we have been really searching since we moved so I am crossing my finger. That was our only income.

I live in California. Because of the state I live in and the high cost of living my benefits from UE are much higher then what is mentioned in your e-mails. Of course the cost of living is higher here also. Honest, when I was first laid off I was a bit relieved as my job of the past 6 years had turn into a very unpleasent daily expierence. As the company suffered decreased revenues due to the not as yet reconized ecconomic downturn, management became very harsh and dictatorian with its sales staff and I was one of them. I took my severence of about 6 months and with the unemployment looked forward to some time off. I really did not do much to find a job for about 6 months as I knew I would be granted a 13 week extension. Sure enough I got a job in the same line of work within 2 weeks. I was laid off 90 days later. I went back on unemployment for 20 weeks on a new claim. By this time, I realized I might have a problem getting a job. I was right. I have sent out resumes every day, gone on a few interviews but with no luck. I have another 13 week extension and have mailed in my claim forms but until the goverment funds it, I will not be receiving any more checks. I will be out of food in about 10 days, I will be homeless in 21 days. I make no excuses. This has been largly my fault. I have to apoligize to all the other unemployed because I did not do my best. I am kinda the guy that the republicans point to when they justify thier callous disregard for their follow Americans. I am sorry.

Jimmy, I'm sure you're not as bad as you made your message sound. Don't be so hard on yourself, we were all thrown for a loop(the one that goes upside down and before you can even focus, does it again). No one knew that it would turn into this. I think we have experienced the same hope and despair and then frozen with uncertainty and fear. I am sure you are doing the best you can. And as far as who the Republicans are talking about, sometimes they can be a little full of themselves, downright self righteous. I should know, I am one and I am ashamed of my political party and their disregard for their fellow man. I wish it was as easy to lay them off or fire them for not doing a good job. Hang in there, Jimmy!

How dare the politicians go on vacation while the country suffers without jobs. If congress does not continue unemployment,, there going to have a bigger problem, instead of having America unemployed their going to have America homeless,we already can not pay everything we need with unemployment so imagine how much worse it will be without UE but if congress can go on vacation and sleep good with America out of work,,, I hardly think they will be too concerned if we are all homeless,,, unless it were an election year, then they would worry more about Americans instead of their vacations

Hope their vacations were great.... Bet 2 million Americans with out a mere $293 per week can't afford one... After these so called representatives of the people will make them and their children suffer from Inadequate Spending..... Very sad.... Hope all that voted against the extension can sleep at night... Remember we still can vote and I will never forget who turned their backs on the American people....
