I Interviewed at Lowe's

lowes jobI am a girly girl who isn't a homeowner. Having said that, I rarely have the need to shop at Lowe's. The company is a retail warehouse filled with merchandise ranging from dishwashers and wooden doors to outside power equipment, so it wasn't a place I ever shopped. I didn't even know how to use a hammer!

The first time I stepped foot in a Lowe's store was when I interviewed for a cashier's position. I needed a part-time job and although my experience with everything involved with home improvement was minimal, I was coaxed by my roommate (and an employee of Lowe's) to apply.

My first interview was with the head of Human Resources for the Atlanta branch. I bugged him for an interview several times after I filled out an online application. During the interview, he asked me a range of questions such as: "Why do you want to work for Lowe's?" "Are you knowledgeable with the products?" and "How do you handle stress?"

Even though I admitted I didn't know much about lawn seed and power tools, I told him I was interested in learning more and getting to know more about home improvement. I had a second interview with a store zone manager where he asked me similar questions. I believe I landed the job because I showed interest in the company and its products, even though I didn't have much knowledge about either.

One tip for those interested in working at Lowe's: Wearing business casual to an interview at Lowe's is key. You want to look professional, but you don't want to overdo it.
