The World's Best Summer Internship

old spice internshipIt's spring break time and a lot of college students are thinking about summer internships. While those internships may bring to mind doing menial tasks such as fetching coffee for people you hope to learn from, there is one internship out there that takes the cake.

The giant consumer goods company Procter and Gamble is launching a new set of Old Spice deodorants and is looking for two guys to promote the products in a unique internship that will send one of them to Europe and The Matterhorn, and the other to Fiji. (See pay for jobs at Proctor and Gamble.

Here is how the company describes the internship. Read it and drool:

In May, two candidates will be hired to participate in the Old Spice Fresh Adventure Internship. As part of their job requirement, the interns will be reporting on their scent-inspired adventures via social media channels and a special blog on

  • Don traditional Swiss lederhosen and tear up the mountain while snowboarding some of the world's best snow. Attach 10 Velcro-padded sticks of Old Spice Matterhorn to the Lederhosen suspenders and hand out to 5 other skiers and snowboarders on the mountain – while yelling out "You smell like Matterhorn!!" – at the same time. Use your helmet cam (provided by Old Spice) to capture video of you in action – and reaction shots.
  • Forget the roulette wheel and fancy cars ... but don't forget the threads. Don a tuxedo and head up to Klein Mountain and snowboard/ski till you fly by Plateau Rosa ... Italy. Capture the multi-country adventure taping proof that you were in two different countries on the same day.
  • Weave a hat from palm fronds, incorporating a stick of Old Spice Fiji as part of the design. Hit the waves and keep the hat on ... in fact, go ahead and wear the hat the rest of your trip (mandatory – videotape proof).
  • Participate in the Aqua-Trek Shark Encounter (with a certified guide), take a photo of the largest shark that makes you sweat and make sure your water-proof Old Spice Fiji is in the shot.

Sounds sweet!

And, that's not all. As part of the internship, the two men hired will get training for their tasks from professional snow boarder Gretchen Bleiler and professional surfer Anastasia Ashley.

I asked Ashley why she decided to do this. "I thought it was a really cool opportunity for someone to get to live the lifestyle that I am lucky enough to live as a professional surfer," she said. "I think it's definitely cooler than just a standard internship in an office. I think its rad to take people out of their element and thrust them into exciting situations."

What are the three top tips she is going to offer the interns? "Enjoy it, have fun, and don't think too much about your worries," she said. "I think you are most effective in life when you're clear headed and positive."

I asked Gretchen what kind of person she thought would make a successful intern. "Definitely an adventurous and athletic guy who has some social media experience," she said.

Applicants must be males 18 or older who live in the United States and have Facebook and/or Twitter accounts. For the application process you'll have to supply a resume and photo, and write an essay on why you should be one of the Old Spice interns. A judging committee will narrow down the entrants to 10 finalists who will be interviewed by phone to determine which two men will get the internships.

To apply, go to The deadline to apply is April 15, 2010.

While you're at it, check out this video of Gretchen and Anastasia at a photo shoot they did to promote the internship program.

no lol actually my man's never even noticed. All scents smell
different on everyone's skin. And I agree that since women aren't the target consumers for old spice that it SHOULD be men getting these internships. I just had to comment cuz I was just reading in Cosmo that its becoming common for girls to wear their man's deodorant or use their body wash because they like the fresh smell on their skin better than sweet or flowery n its good to know I'm not the only one hahaha...sooo sorry, but if something looks good/smells good on me, I'm going to use it. And just a heads up, I can't be 100% sure on this, but i doubt lesbians want their girlfriends to remind them of men.

Hey guys, sorry to burst your bubble but, although it is true that females do indeed perspire and can indeed do those tasks, oldspice is a product designed specificaly for males. Although a man could indeed wear panties, you don't see any men in victoria secret ads. It's not sexual discrimination, it's logic.

Katie, JUNE, Tamar, RB - The internship is for young men only because that is the target market for Old Spice. P&G are trying to expand their market. This ISN'T a position where just anyone could apply. Our military has age limits which exclude "older workers" (those over 40) from joining the military. You don't hear any complaints there, do you? People typically don't consider this discriminatory, because most folks over 40 would have a REAL fun time going through boot camp.

You fell prey to the lure! The only reason you thought about discrimination and lawsuits was because they added the line "Women need not apply". Why represent yourself as an opportunistic feminazi?

Well, as I understand it, the two women featured in the article have already been chosen to be involved in the process. The interns Old Spice is looking for are to be their counterparts. It's a boy-girl, boy-girl matchup. I don't think it's sexist...they just already had the girls.

In my opinion if a company wants to hire all male workers then they can hire all male workers their not the only company thats offering work so whats the big deal?

These people are so annoying. They are hiring men because men wear old spice. Would you expect lady speed stick or secret deodarant to hire men and women to test or promote their product? No. Get over it.
