Want the Job? Shave the 'Stache

"I know that you've had it for more than 30 years, but if you want to be a serious contender in today's job market, you're going to have to shave off that little gray thing in the middle of your face," I told Jack Iannaccone, a 54-year-old New Jersey father of three who had been out of work for a year. His wife was blanching -- she'd never known him without his mustache. But still, producers at the CBS Early Show had sent me all the way from Los Angeles to New Jersey to help Jack get a job, so he took razor in hand and hoped for the best.

Your eyes couldn't help but be drawn to that silvery bar right in the middle of his face, and it shouted, "I could be your grampa!" rather than "I'm a hot, vital business phenom." I'm not kidding when I say it took 10-15 years off his look. In today's competitive job market, it's extremely important to look as fresh and hip as possible.

About two days after I worked with him, Jack ran into an old friend who said he looked amazing--like he hadn't aged in 20 years. They started talking, and voila! He not only offered Jack a job, but a partnership in his company. After some negotiation, Jack eventually accepted both offers, and is now happily employed as Managing Director – American Academy of OB/GYN & Infertility Nurses. We were just reunited to talk about his success on the Early Show.

Now of course, shaving the mustache wasn't the only advice Jack implemented. As I advise in my book, Career Comeback--Repackage Yourself to Get the Job You Want, I also showed him how to brand himself with a blog, and spiffed up his mostly gray business wardrobe with a brand new navy blue pinstriped Hugo Boss suit, a lavender Joseph Aboud shirt, a bright colored Missoni tie that brought it all together, and a pair of Cole Haan shoes, all courtesy of Zappos.com.

Jack will be the first to tell you that his new, fresh hip face and image gave him a fresh, hip attitude that potential employers couldn't resist. His story of being a middle-aged man who finally figured out how to land a great job in this troubled economy is so inspiring that still another professional field is opening up to him: that of public speaking.

Meanwhile, it took awhile, but his wife has finally gotten used to the feel of kissing Jack without the brushy, gray growth on his upper lip. She says she likes it just fine, and doesn't ever want to see it again.

Step by Step

Jack's physical makeover included:

--Shaving the mustache

--Cutting hair extremely close to de-emphasize bald spots (I tried to get him to shave his head, but that was going a bit too far.)

--Taking off the round, wire-rimmed glasses that also aged him.

--Selecting a dark suit color that provided contrast, rather than a medium gray that blends in

--Wearing a colored shirt, rather than plain white

--Choosing a strong, colorful, interesting tie that stands out and leaves a bold, vital impression, rather than an unmemorable tie that fades back.

He probably felt ready for the change. He looks fine either way, to me, but in the after pic he 'radiates' differently.
I would HATE a forced makeover (I'm a woman) so I wouldn't look so great in a after pic, because I would be so unhappy.
You have to really WANT the changes. It's all going on inside of you anyway, to how you then project on the outside.

This is to Ginnny.

I was not going to comment as my statement has nothing to do with the article but I wanted to indicate that Ashleigh was correct regarding requirements for psychologists. Psychologists are NOT bachelor's prepared couselors. They have doctorates and pass their state licensing requirements. Some states license at the master's level. I just did not want incorrect information put out as fact. As for the article, I am happy that he found a job given these economic times.

To Ginny,

Ashleigh is correct. A BA in psychology doesn't make a psychologist. A psychiatrist is an MD, trained in psychiatry, which means he can prescribe meds., treatments, tests, etc. as well as be into talking cures. A psychologist deals with similar patients but cannot prescribe meds, can suggest tests to the psychiatrist, can administer tests, etc. They overlap somewhat.

Ashleigh isn't pulling Pat down, just being realistic. A BA in psychology doesn't go for much without an MA, to which Pat could be working.

All guys should take heed. Facial hair lowers others impression of you by one class standing and always makes you look older. Clean shaven is sexy. Grubby was out 2 years ago, and goatees are the absolute worst effort ever to try to look cool.

A new makeover never hurts. There are shows on TV that always tell you what to wear and not wear. My daughter,23, has a Psychology degree and landed a job as a Behavorial Analyst working with kids with Autism. She knew her degree required a Master's and that is what she is working toward. You have to keep striving for success, it will not come to you. Knowledge is power. Find a mentor. There are 24 hours in a day and how you utilize your time makes the difference in why the top people who are truly successful, Trump, Buffet, Gates, Oprah, realize that you don't have time to worry about the little picture, but strive for the best. They have the same 24 hours you do. What are you doing with yours?

Loosing the grey mustache and the old man glasses helped, but the free publicityhe brings to a start up business with the national exposure on CBS helps to, with a little luck he can geta follow up story

Jack, you look great! Those tips are great advice for anyone seeking a job. Jacki, instead of complaining about how someone else is getting attention instead of you, you should take the advice given to Jack and change it to fit a woman. Maybe you could try a new image, update your resume, and don't take no for an answer. If you are a hard worker and know your field, you will find a job soon. Don't worry. But remember, you are only as good as your competitors, so don't ever settle for second best

It is a funny thing about facial hair. Those who like it or who do not mind it will not hire you just because you have it. Those who dislike it may very well not hire you if you have it. Think about it and then decide what you will do about shaving close. (PS: I have facial hair but I work for myself and think it gives me a certain air of distinction.)
