10 Careers That Didn't Exist 10 Years Ago

Rachel Zupek, CareerBuilder.com writer

Every so often, you meet someone with a job title that makes you go, "Huh?" Either it's too technical to understand, too hard to describe or in some cases, people just may not have heard of it. But, why would someone not have heard about a job's existence?

Simple: All the changes that have come about in the past 10 years, from environmental policy to emerging technologies to the recession, have contributed to the creation of careers that never could have existed before.

Dom Sagolla, co-creator of Twitter, for example, recently made the switch from working in research and development at Adobe to creating iPhone applications with his company, DollarApp. Sagolla is also authoring a book, "140 Characters," which demonstrates the effect of hypertext on literature by redefining the concept of "the book" using Twitter and iPhone to start, he says. Could he have done this 10 years ago? Doubtful.

"I've noticed that the best-of-breed iPhone apps incorporate Twitter and social networks, and the best Twitter apps seem to be on iPhone," Sagolla says. "That is no coincidence: The two came to prominence at roughly the same time. I've worked hard to position myself at intersection of those two industries, which form a vortex of attention and zeal that is unmatched."

Here is a little information about 10 careers that didn't exist a decade ago:

1. Bloggers

What they do: Bloggers research and write blog posts in a conversational style to engage readers online. They work for themselves or for corporations, but their goal is the same: to develop and maintain blogs to promote a brand, mission or objective. Jimmy Moore, owner of "Livin La Vida Low-Carb," started his blog in April 2005 after losing 180 pounds. He wrote about it while still employed in a customer service position. He began blogging full time in October 2006.

"My annual income increased from about $25,000 a year to nearly $60,000 now. I get to work out of my home, I've written two books, host my twice-weekly health podcast show on iTunes, do YouTube videos and so much more. This is literally my dream job," he says. "[It] didn't even exist a decade ago."

See salary info for a blogger.

2. Community managers or content managers

What they do: Community or content managers are an extension of a typical marketing role, but on a more personal level. They serve as a liaison between the company and the public, managing a Web site that allows them to engage with community members and spread the word about the company.

Erin Bury has been the community manager at Sprouter, a Toronto company that enables collaboration and networking among entrepreneurs, for almost one year. She says, "A community manager is a nontraditional role, so it requires some unique traits: the ability to adapt quickly, the ability to juggle a multitude of tasks while still keeping a smile on their face, and an innate passion for what they do. This isn't a 9-to-5 job; it's one that involves being an extension of the brand almost 24/7, which is why loving the company and the job is a prerequisite."

See salary info for a content manager.

3. Green funeral directors

What they do: Green funeral directors incorporate environmentally friendly options to meet the needs of families who want a green service.

"A green funeral may include any or all of the following basic options: no embalming or embalming with formaldehyde-free products; the use of sustainable biodegradable clothing, shroud or casket; using recycled paper products, locally grown organic flowers, organic food; car pooling; arranging a small memorial gathering in a natural setting; [or a] natural or green burial," says Elizabeth Fournier, a funeral home owner who works as a green mortician. "It's a fabulous opening for an individual who is green-minded in all aspects of their work."

4. Interior redesigners

What they do: Instead of spending $500 on a new couch, why not use that money to hire an interior redesigner who will find new ways to decorate with items you already own? Interior redesigners remodel your home using the things you already have, either repurposing them for other uses or putting them in other rooms, etc.

Jennifer Schweikert, owner of Just My Style by JMS, says, "In a time of 'less is more,' people streamlining possessions, baby boomers and seniors downsizing, and the green movement of reduce, reuse and recycle, interior redesign is an up-and-coming field of work that addresses these needs in today's lifestyle and economy."

5. Patient advocates

What they do: There are several types of patient advocates, and although their services vary, all of them want to make sure that the patient and family are informed and to make things easier on everyone. Advocates can go with patients to appointments; ensure they're visiting with the right specialists and taking the right medicines; sort through medical bills and negotiate fees with health-care providers and insurance companies; they can even educate family members on proper care for their sick loved one.

6. Senior move management

What they do: Senior move management companies help older adults and families with the physical and emotional demands of downsizing, relocating or modifying their homes.

7. Social media strategists

What they do: Social media strategists use social media tools to help companies interact with customers, increase brand awareness, create buzz, increase traffic and provide information.

See salary info for a social media manager.

8. User experience analyst

What they do: User experience analysts look for ways to make using a Web site easier, more pleasant and more engaging for consumers. They want to figure out how to keep you on their site and how to make your experience while you're there memorable and useful.

9. Video journalists

What they do: In the 1960s, reporters had to shoot and edit their own stories because of lack of manpower and resources. Now, almost 50 years later, this role is back, but now it's called video journalism. To save money, large-market news groups hire small-market reporters as video journalists at a fraction of the cost. They are usually assigned stories to produce for the station Web site, finding content to drive Web traffic.

10. Virtual business service providers

What they do: Many people are forming their own companies by way of telecommuting, offering such virtual services as customer service, concierge services or even public relations from their homes.

"Thanks to the birth of the Internet and the rise of new industries because of it, my company was born. The rise of virtual companies like ours has provided jobs for lots of people," says Deborah Sittig, owner of Green Room Public Relations.

WHY IS OBAMA AFFRAID TO STOP THE OFFSHORING OF OUR JOBS?

The outsourcing (offshoring)of our jobs is exactly like a disease that will eventually destroy our once great nation if it is not stopped immediately. Not only have the production of almost all consumer and industrial products been outsourced, but now all types of services are being outsourced such as engineering, writing, administration, accounting, marketing, design, sales, word-processing, programming, tech support etc.

Our corrupt, careless government leaders don’t give a rat’s ass. They know their enormous pay and million dollar pensions are guaranteed. Instead of controlling inflation, They kick back and do nothing as prices skyrocket (Food, Utilities, Healthcare, Shelter, Taxes. Etc) everything up and up. All they do is laugh and vote themselves BIG pay raises instead of dealing with the problem. They don’t even care about the deficit, they’ll just continue to borrow money not only from the Federal Reserve (which is a privately owned bank not the government) but from other countries like communist China .

Face the facts, the main reason we have gone into a recession and are heading into a depression is because so many Americans are losing there jobs mainly due to the off-shoring and partly due hiring of illegal immigrants. Even people who haven’t lost there jobs yet see the jobs disappearing at an alarming rate and a worthless, lazy, corrupt, evil government who instead of stopping the outsourcing by penalizing them, they instead rewarded these multi-million dollar companies with tax breaks to encourage the offshoring.

There’s is ONLY one way to counter the recession/ depression. Reverse the outsourcing and bring the jobs back. All the government has to do is to start penalizing/ increase taxes on companies that outsource and lower taxes on companies that don’t. At the same time increase import taxes Level the playing field. Double, triple, or even quad triple the taxes on all American companies that offshore their labor. Tax them to a level that will encourage them to return the jobs back to this country and will discourage others to offshore who plan to. It’s simple as that. Use that tax money to create jobs, help bankrupt cities and lower the national debt.

Why doesn’t the government do this? It’s because outsourcing helps the filthy rich get richer and that’s all our government cares about. Stopping the outsourcing means stopping the bribes and favors the politicians receive and they aren’t about to let that happen. Of course our government is now almost completely controlled by Global Big Business through bribes via corporate lobbyists. Many of our government leaders actually want a depression so that these business's can turn us into helpless slaves.

Unfortunately Obama doesn’t have the balls to stand up to Big Business and the filthy rich corporations that don't give a damn about America like he promised during his campaign.

UNEMPLOYMENT WILL CONTINUE TO RISE INDEFINETLY FOR TWO REASONS

First, the population is expanding (births and immigration) so logically you will need more jobs.

Second, a massive, and I mean MASSIVE campaign by big business to offshore every American job that's humanly possible. And now with the internet, they have been able to offshore almost everything and watch it from here. Automation or Outsource is the main goal of BIG BUSINESS which now completely controls our government.

And thanks to our worthless, greedy, corrupt beyond belief government, they have succeeded in offshoring more than 40 million American jobs over the last 25years. Thanks to all the bribes and favors our politicians received, deals by dick head Bill Clinton and AssWipes George Bush JR and Senior, the outsourcing overseas and to Mexico has snowballed.

Even if you stop the outsourcing, we would still have a shortage of jobs because the population is growing fast however when you combine this with massive offshoring of jobs you eventually end up with massive unemployment.

It’s simple mathematics.
Population expanding + massive offshoring = massive unemployment

Until we revolt and take back the government from Global Big Business and punish all the politicians that sold us out ( most of them) things will only get worse. People must understand that the Filthy Rich which includes Global Big Business and the Banks now completely control the government and they have found a way to suck up all the money leaving the country ready to collapse from major debt. And our economy will totally collapse unless we revolt and save it.

WHY STEROIDS ARE LIKE OUTSOURCING,
EVEN MARK MCGUIRE WOULD AGREE

Just like steroids in professional sports the biggest excuse most companies give for outsourcing is that is that everyone else is doing it so the only way for us to stay competitive is to outsource too. This is all because our greedy, rotten, worthless government helped to ship away all our jobs to other countries mainly China, India and Mexico. They want to control our personal lives but when it comes to big business, well they can do what ever they want. It should be the other way around.

Sure a lot of items are cheaper to buy but what about the quality. There is none. That’s why everything you buy these days breaks in a year or two and you have to buy another and another and another. If it was made here in the US it may cost twice as much but last ten times longer. (excluding autos)

Many American companies are tricking us into thinking we are buying made in America. Awhile back I bought a faucet made by American Standard thinking I was buying made in America. Later after I installed it, I looked at with a magnifying glass and found made in Mexico written in teeny tiny print on the back. JC Penny has a new line of clothes called American Culture. It’s all made overseas.

Indeed our government has become so corrupt it’s beyond belief. Our government used to care about the people but now it doesn’t give a rats ass. All our government cares about is helping the rich to get richer. The ONLY way the rich can become richer is by sucking more and more money out of the working class, mainly the middle class..
The cost of living has skyrocketed, utilities, food, rent. taxes, fees, and yes now again gas, everything up and up. Everything except pay that is. Unless you work for the government. They keep giving themselves huge cost of living increases while the rest of us are getting pay cuts or getting laid off to make room for lower paid workers.

All the decent jobs have been outsourced and there is nothing left but crappy, dead end, bottom of the barrow jobs that are low paying with NO benefits. Most companies go through agencies these days so they won’t have to pay you shit or give you benefits or job security. Our government thinks that’s cool. Instead of stopping the outsourcing our government encourages it. Even the government is outsourcing now. If your job doesn’t get outsourced than you will probably lose it to an illegal alien who will work for much less.

Our worthless government just kicked back and laughed as all the decent jobs were outsourced and even helped them by giving tax breaks to companies that offshored.. When it comes to major problems like jobs, healthcare, social security, etc, our government could care less. These things don’t affect the rich so our government doesn’t give a damn. Terrorism indeed affects the rich so our government is greatly concerned and has no limit on military and anti-terrorism spending. We will all pay for the war eventually. Of course our government won’t spend a dime on creating jobs, healthcare or helping the working people of this country, Instead of coming up with solutions , all they want to do raise taxes Matter of fact, all the government leaders do all day are three things.:

1) Search for bribes and kickbacks
2) Try to come up with new ways to tax us
3) Vote themselves big pay raises

The people that are running our government are nothing but lazy, selfish, evil, corrupt scumbags. All they give us is BS BS and more BS

The system we have here in this country was working fine until our governmnet leaders starting taking bribes from big business and started de-regulating everything. Although I'm very liberal, we need government regulation
when it comes to big business like healthcare, oil, gas, electricity, outsourcing, etc.

If the government enacts universal health coverage, the hospitals will double, triple, quad triple their rates because they know the government will pay.
What we need is regulation, what we need is some control over these businesses like we used to have...

WHY DO OUR GOVERNMENT LEADERS WANT THE NATIONAL DEBT TO RISE ?

Congress and the rest of our corrupt government love it when the national debt climbs. Not only do they get favors like bribes and kickbacks from the Fed (which is not a government agency but part of a global banking system) but since it causes inflation to rise, they have an excuse to vote themselves some more huge pay raises while millions lose their jobs and slip into poverty and even become homeless.

The Global corporations ( which now completely control our government) know that even if people have no jobs they will simply borrow to buy the products they need. They will sell everything they own including their souls. They will steal to get money to buy. The corporations also figure they can sell to countries that have not destroyed their economies. If they lose money, they can file bankruptcy and get the tax payer to reimburse them for their loss. Then simply reopen under a new name. They have it all planned out. They get everything, we lose everything,

Face it, both Global Big business and the Global Banks completely control our government now. They want to increase inflation and government spending. This means more interest on the national debt which means the banks own more and more of America and everything we own will soon become theirs one way or another.

WHY WOULD THE GLOBAL CORPS WANT TO OFFSHORE EVERY U.S.JOB ?

This why the only answer is a total revolt to remove the infection of the Global Banks and Corps.

All members of our present government must be put on trial and imprisoned for selling us out and be replaced with decent humans that won't sell us out to the filthy rich.

WHY IS THE COST OF LABOR SO HIGH IN THE U.S.A. ?

The VICIOUS CYCLE
Spending
Borrowing
Inflation
OffShoring
Unemployment

The main goal of every American company these days to offshore their labor. For many reasons but mainly for cheap labor. Why is the labor so much cheaper in other countries?

It’s because inflation has increased so tremendously in America over than last 30 years it’s astounding. Why has it increased so rapidly here but not in these other countries like China and India?

It’s all because of our government spending and the runaway national debt. Our government thinks the solution to everything is spend borrow, spend borrow, spend borrow borrow borrow. Every time it goes up the dollar value goes down which cause inflation.

As inflation rises, our lazy, worthless, corrupt as hell government leaders simply vote themselves pay raises instead of dealing with the problems. As inflation rises so does the cost of living. Workers demand higher wages to keep up with the inflation and high cost of living is the US.

Most American companies have decided the wages are just too high here so their main goal is to outsource overseas or to Mexico. This causes more layoffs which cause more Americans to apply for government assistance.

So then the government has to borrow more money to support those out of work which raises the national debt even more which raises inflation which forces more companies to outsource which causes more unemployment and so on.

The worse unemployment gets, the more the government will have to spend on welfare. This raises the national debt which raises inflation which means people want higher wages which causes more outsourcing of jobs.

Our government does not want to break the cycle because inflation benefits the filthy rich and that’s the only people they care about.

Wonderful -- jobs that did not exist 10 years ago. Jobs which were developed in the United States, jobs which will be moving to India by next year.
