According to Warriner's English Grammar and Composition, "Publishers disagree about the use of a comma before the "and" joining the last two words in a series...there are some constructions in which the inclusion or omission of this comma affects the meaning of the sentence." I encourage my students to use the comma if the last two items in a series are unrelated. Mea culpa - I didn't hit the space bar when I should have.
