Amid the daily din of news about a possible economic downturn, U.S. workers are left wondering what to do if a recession hits. What's the best business to be in during a recession? Are some industries safer than others? Experts say there are, in fact, some recession-proof jobs that may be a better bet.
In the wake of the housing crisis, news abounds of a looming recession, with regular reports of financial gloom. It's no wonder workers are fretting over finances and the employment outlook for the coming months, as a recent Hudson Employment Index shows.
Workers shouldn't worry, experts say. Jobs in some industries do have good potential for weathering a financial storm. It's more important, though, for employees to focus on making themselves recession-proof. strong
Best Businesses During a Recession
Even during boom times no job is fail-safe. But some industries are safer havens than others, experts say, such as healthcare, the federal government, clean technology, information technology, and sales and marketing.
"I think the recession-proof jobs are where people need the goods and services regardless, like healthcare and pharmaceuticals. People are getting older, people are getting frailer, and demographics of the population are aging. Biosciences, physical therapy, occupational therapy-those are jobs that are as recession-proof as they come. They also require specialized skills," says Jon Bender, managing partner with PrincetonOne, a New Jersey-based recruiting firm.
Sales and marketing positions and others supporting them are fairly sturdy, according to Kevin Donlin, author and creator of The Simple Job Search system. Anyone who makes or saves money for a company will be relatively safe, he says. Federal government jobs also may be worth considering.
"Uncle Sam hires approximately 2 percent of America's total workforce and the pay and benefits are outstanding. Few feds lose their jobs during a recession and most downsizing in the federal government is based on attrition, not filling vacant positions, rather than letting people go. I know firsthand; from 1969 through January of 2005, I worked for Uncle Sam and went through a number of recessions and agency reorganizations during that time," says author and retired federal employee Dennis V. Damp.
With baby boomers leaving government jobs, there are many opportunities to land these positions, Damp says, noting the best time to act is before a recession.

Surviving a Recession - What to Do if a Recession Hits
During a recession isn't the best time to take charge of your work life and make drastic decisions, experts agree.
Marc Karasu, a career coach and former vice president of advertising and marketing at Yahoo! HotJobs, says workers should concentrate on their current job and highlight how they've exceeded expectations.
"Self-promotion is a fine thing, and there's nothing wrong with letting your superiors know in a professional and intelligent way that you're adding value. If you can, start demonstrating the value you add to a company through your annual performance review," Karasu says. "Also, meet with your boss and say where you are doing good, where you can improve. Bosses like to see people come to them proactively. The key is to do it today before a recession, so you don't look desperate."
Career expert Les McKeown says it's more difficult to identify recession-proof jobs or industries than it was 15 years ago, so workers trying to build a career must establish their own individual security.
To do that, McKeown says, they must prove that it would cost their employer more to let them go than it would cost to keep them. Ultimately the employee is seen as someone who would flourish no matter where in the company he or she lands. "At the end of the day the only way to make yourself recession-proof is to make your opportunity cost as high as possible. [You want employers to] say, 'We can't let Jane go because we can put her anywhere,'" McKeown explains. "You must have a personal ability to add value. If you can do that, then you're as recession-proof as anyone."

I agree with the comments that working for yourself is the way to go, however 98% of the average person has no clue on how to do that. From my experience over the years of being a stay-at-home Mom and Internet Marketer it is a MUST and I mean a MUST to educate yourself before you decide to get involved in ANY online Home Based Business. I had gone through 1,000's of dollars before I realized this and then someone introduced me to a company where I learn everyday at a fraction of the course of going back to college. There is live online training and an archive of videos, e-books, recorded trainings, etc. Should you decide to go this route, I strongly recommend visiting:

Hi Frank,
Tell me about this work from home blog that tags AOL's article on Recession-Proof Jobs. It is time for me to do something a little radical.
Thanks,

WHOEVER WROTE THIS ARTICLE, STOP LYING TO THE PEOPLE! YOU ARE PUTTING A FALSE HOPE IN PEOPLE! Healthcare is not recession proof! I can prove it to you now. People lose their jobs, lose their health insurance. They go to the government for help and are denied because the state governments are so hard up for money, they are not taking anymore clients. The clients they do have, they are reducing their benefits or are kicking them out of the program all together. I know because I work in the health field and the government funded patients have dwindled to where there is no work. People still need care, medicine, medical equipment, but because they have no health insurance, no job, no source of government help, and no money, they go without and suffer. There is no hope in ANY job. I am now trying to start two businesses and can't seem to find the funding because the banks want to keep that Government Bailout $ for their luxery-exotic vacations to Las Vegas, etc. I asked one bank about that bailout and he confirmed they took the money and eventhough the policy was they were to lend the money out to stimulate the economy, they wouldn't even give me an application nor even wanted to hear about the business. Last fall, my hours were decreased to 15-25 hours/ week, so I found another job fulltime in the health field, but by the time I gave my notice and started, the economy nosedived even more and they didn't have work. After almost a month of no work, I filed for unemployment on the internet because they wouldn't answer their phones. I could never reach them on the phone, they never answered emails, and I even e-mailed the Governor about my concern. This was last fall. I am still waiting for the Governors office to contact me. I went to the VA. Employment Commission and was horrified with how rude and verbally/physically abusive they were with I and several clients. Several men, when they tried to file a complaint, the woman running that specific location told them if they didn't like the treatment, they could leave and come back later. As she and I were going to her office she kept pushing me and I kept asking her to please stop pushing me which she responded "I am not pushing you" and she would push me again. Finally, she said she was in a hurry and did not have time to help people due to "somebody" from high up was "coming at 8:30am to do an inventory on how we used our resources!" I didn't say anything. I am hoping the way she said it was just poor choice of words and not actually employees stealing from the state. When I told her that I on many occasions called their toll free number I could never get anybody. She told me that was because the state discontinued the toll free call center due to money and gave her location the responsibility to answer the calls. She further stated that there were only six employees at her center and they don't have time to answer phones, so they just don't answer the phone. She informed me there would be a hearing on my case eventhough I received a notice telling me how much I would get but still had not received it. She gave me a wrong date for the hearing . I had not received anything in the mail about a hearing until after the hearing date. When I realized the date did not correspond to the correct day I informed her which she was irritated with me. Because it was such short notice, I asked if it could be rescheduled and I had a valid reason. She abruptly told me "they won't reschedule!" I kept pressing her to ask them, so she finally called the woman who does the hearings and fit me in which I was grateful. The woman doing the hearing was down right disgraceful. She was dehumanizing, abusive, screaming at me. I would try to answer her questions and she would cut me off with her screaming things like if I didn't shutup she was going to hang up on me, "I JUST WANT YES OR NO!" but these were not yes or no questions. I finally got the notice for this hearing after the original hearing date. I also received a letter telling me that I was denied benefits. The government (local, state, and federal) does not care about the American people, and I will prove it to you now: this new bailout is not going to be like a year ago. I read in the news that the money is going to guess who?: THE BANKS for them to lend to people (which will instead be used for CEO saleries and luxery resort vacations). It is also going to the state governments to bail them out. WE THE PEOPLE are again being left out in the cold. WE THE PEOPLE, we are not living in Mary Poppins town, so WAKE UP AND FACE REALITY. THERE ARE NO JOBS! THERE IS NO ACCOUNTABILITY BY WALL STREET, THE BANKS, NOR OUR GOVERNMENT! THE AMERICAN DREAM IS DEAD AND WAS BURIED WITH JIMMY STEWART! I welcome anybody to enter their comments of how I am wrong but I am NOT wrong. And truthfully, I wish I was wrong.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience with us. What you have described in your blog is something that not only happens in Virginia but else where throughout the U.S.A. People who work for the government, some not all, do not respect the people that ensure even their jobs. It is a sad truth. But it is one that we must be more proactive to expose. You say that you contacted the Govenor's office. Have you called? Or tried to contact again? How about taking it higher than that. Write the president. Or contact your local news station. They would love this story. I wish you the best. And keep faith!!!

yes we are having the same experiences in louisiana right now. my mom was wiped out in hurricane rita and again in ike. i was in houston and ike got me too. so now i am living with her in a fema trailoer. we go to the lawork (work force) nearly every day to do resumes online, use thier fax, ect. BUT they employees thee never actually help anyone. they check you in, and then if you have an issue thay just pass the buck. we asked for computer training and they told us were we not eligible for "intensive sevices" we are both jobless and if not for the fema trailer whould be homeless too. I dont see how they base thier criteria in that maner. They have thier jobs and take thier sweet timw getting getting around to you if you neddd help. it is a shame and a disgrace that in America people can get away with treating others so rudely. i am more than annoyed, if the situation goes on much longer i am just going to give up. I was a nurse in the texas medical center for many years, until i got ill from it. i have tons of experience but yet i cant find a job that pays more than 8 dollars an hour. want to switch to a front office typr of job with a dentist or doctor but i needthe computer training first. iam mad mad mad as hell about this. they are suspossed to be helping us., but they are not!

The only recession proof job is to own your own home based business in the growing Internet education business.
Aside from the amazing tax benefits of being an entrepreneur, there is the awesome FREEDOM of being your own boss. Having a JOB (Just Over Broke) will never provide freedom. Even a brick and mortar business, which alleviates the ‘boss’; ends up controlling you – no TIME, no FREEDOM and much stress.
The paradigm shift has occurred! A home-based internet business is the future. Be in FRONT of a trend (don’t be the person selling 8 tracks on EBay!). Own your own business; call your own hours in the comfort of your own home.
I can provide you with free information to change you life. Check out http://www.DianeCostello.com and learn how to find true freedom.
